The two "Dark Angel" books seems to be generally thought of as bad - why is this?
Please, don't just write "because they are badly written" unless you follow it up by "...because XXX".

I really have no idea.
I liked them, they were very educational about the DA background.
I think one gripe was the whole Emo suicide things they did at the end of Angels of Darkness.

I personnaly really liked decent of angels, it was nice to read about a primarch before the emporer found him. It would be good if they made a book about corax before they found him but decent of angels is good enough

I've encountered none of this hate. All my discussions of those has been just as accepted and serious as any other fiction-based discussion.
Also, they are some of my favorite books in the entire series (Though, looking at my name and such it would be safe to say I harbor a bit of bias toward the Dark Angels. )

Personally I was less than enamoured with mitchel scannlons writing style, the book failed to grip me in the same way as others of the series had, I felt that at the time of its release the last couple of books had been progressing nicely through the roots of the Heresy up to Istvaan III, then all of a sudden I'm cast back to the homeplanet of a chapter I've never had much sympathy for with a storyline that wont converge with the one i've been immersed in for about 200 years. It wasnt that it was a bad book as such just failed to capture my interest. Tbh the DA sub plot isnt actually that integral to the main events of the Heresy, more of a reasoning why an entire legion stayed out of the fighting as a whole. In retrospect I wouldve read this book at lowest priority after reading all the other Heresy books both current and future.
I normally devour books, I read first Heretic in a couple of days (working days I might add not days off) whereas DoA took me about 2 weeks out of apathy.
Not read Fallen Angels yet but am re-reading the series atm so will read it this time round.

I don't hate the books however I din't like them anywhere near the level I've liked others in the series.
I'm not saying that they are the only books I've disliked - Battle for the Abyss was another - It's just they didn't make for good reading in my own opinion.
Going from a story in a series of books that up until that point was all about galactic battles of enormous scale and significance to a book that in several places I could not get Monty Python and the holy grail out of my head just didn't do it for me.
I can see the significance in filling in the blanks for DA fans however I'm not one of them and it didn't hold my interest anywhere near the amount that other books in the series has had.
I was disappointed with both books. I had been looking forward to them.

I only read Descent and it's not nearly as bad people say.
I'd love a book about Mortarion, however.

Was one of the Angels books about that Death Star or whatever built in/around Saturn? Because that book was soooooo bad. It was clichéd, did not use interesting language, made me facepalm whenever the (horribly clichéd) villain appeared, and made me utter the Eight Deadly Words of Fiction Writing:
"I don't care *what* happens to these people."
|
"I went into a hobby-shop to play m'self a game,
The 'ouse Guru 'e up an' sez "The Guard is weak and lame!"
The Chaos gits around the shelves they laughed and snickered in my face,
I outs into the street again an' grabbed my figure-case."
Oh it's "Angels this" an' "Space-wolves that", and "Guardsmen, go away!";
But it's "Thank you for the ordnance" when the Guard begins to play,
O it's "LOOK AT ALL THE ORDNANCE!" when the Guard begins to play.."

Do you mean "Battle for the Abyss"? If so, no that was not a Dark Angels book. That particular one was about the Word Bearers.

It may have been, I dunno. All I can say is that it was so bad, I stopped reading the Horus Heresy books.

I finished Fallen Angels a little while ago and I thought Descent of Angels was a good insight into the Pre-Heresy Dark Angels and Caliban. However, the part which really bugged me with Fallen Angels was the battle scenes, which read almost just like a battle report. I almost expected to turn the page and find something along the lines of "Turn 4, more World Eaters Rhinos moved east to the Dark Angel position, with 3 Kill Points"

That's it in a nutshell. Up until then, the series had been going along at a merry clip. This just seemed to put the screeching brakes on it. Even worse that they spaced them out so far.
As a story, I'm quite looking forward to the conclusion.

The 2 previous books in HH were Fulgrim and Flight of the Eisenstein I believe, both of which were really good and shed lots of light on how the Heresy came about. Then all of a sudden we got Descent of Angels, 80% of which is set on Caliban pre-Heresy and did nothing to advance the overall HH plot. NOT A BAD THING but it wasn't what people were expecting. I did hate the last part of the book though, a gratuitous battle scene that I feel was included to justify the "HH Series" label on the book, oh btw CHAOZ EXISTZ.
It made much more sense to me when Fallen Angels came out, its then I realised that the first book was actually a gigantic intro to the second.

Dark Angels are one of my favorite chapter backgrounds. I didn't read the 2nd book, but after reading the first book, I felt like the book was cut off in the middle. It just didnt end right, and left me disappointed.
