Hello all. I have come to you guys with a important question: What do you think I could make with an Ogryn Army?

I am trying to get an (Incredibly incredibly cheap) friend into the game, and I think the cheapest way of making an army would be with buying some Fantasy Ogres and converting them to Ogryns, but what kind of army could I make with that?

I need ideas...

What kind of an army? Not a good one.

Ogryn are basically concentrated guardsmen. They stand up to small arms fire about as well as their points in guardsmen, and do about as much damage as their points in guardsmen shooting lasguns or charging.

The problem is, like regular guardsmen, they have terrible leadership. Nothing hurts quite as much as 250+ points of ogryn run off the table, just because a railgun aced one...

The way to remedy this problem, like with regular infantry, is with commissars, but ogryn don't have access to them. As such, you basically need to bring a lord commissar for each ogryn squad you bring, which basically limits you to 2 ogryn squads, and that's if you don't care to bring a PCS.

The problem with this is that two properly outfitted ogryn squads costs about 700 points, which is a HUGE chunk of points to spend on support units, unless you're talking about like a 2000 point list, and with ogryn as your only support unit.

Which, of course, is their problem - they're a support unit. Any time you spend too many points on support at the sacrifice of your troops, regardless of the particular support unit taken, you're setting yourself up for a tough time.

Maybe an ork army with lots of Nobs units. Or a counts-as Deathwing army.

EDIT: Unless it has to be guard, of course. Then it'd just be a bad idea, power level-wise.

The Seraphs of Thunder: a homebrew, almost entirely converted successor Deathwing. And also some Orks. And whatever else I have lying around.

I second the Nobz idea. A big enough Boss (a Tyrant-sized ogre would suffice) plus a bunch of Nobz with PKs and a Painboy could work.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Ogryn are a cool unit, but they're Elites and that's kind of a problem for what you're going for. You could take three separate ten man squads of them, and that'll eat up like 1200 points.

Ooooo, good idea, I'll run that by him.

Nah, it doesn't have to be Guard, I should have specified that earlier, sorry about that.

What do you guys think of a possible NidZilla Ogryn force? Too over the top?

Meh, the dude it's for doesn't plan on playing outside of our group, and no one in the group plays DEldar.

I'm just trying to find a way for my Dad to play, since he wants to play but hasn't found an army he likes that is "Cheap to build".

If he's cheap, play with lego for now, and slowly replace each unit with actual models as time goes by.

I outflanked an Ogryn Squad once with Creed. It was fun, but I dont think I'd ever use it as a viable option. Just too slow and squishy.
