I thought it was Tactical Marines because, yaknow, they're the staple unit of the entire marketing of 40k

Tactical Marines definately. Nothing else is more iconic than a space marine with a bolter.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

You know, there isn't much that is iconic if you think about it.

There's a funky Warhammer on the front cover of every rulebook, but there's not really any cool models holding it.

Closest is the thunder hammer, and any model holing one so far isboring in my opinion.

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

I don't know how anyone can say anything other than a space marine.

I am going to say a terminator marine. Marine armor has changed a ton but terminators have always been the "biggest badasses" in fact just thinking about it makes me want to go play chaos gate. those termies won me so many missions.

When in doubt burn it, then burn yourself for doubting.

Any space marine. Even for people who don't like them, when someone says "40k" people think "Space Marines."

40k as a whole? Tactical Marine with a bolter. Commissars and Leman Russes are probably 2nd in line.

Possibly the Leman Russ or the Land Raider.
They are pretty iconic... though the Tactical marine is pretty far up there.

Space Marines are the visual shorthand for 40k, and are the focal point of most of GW's attention. They're usually the first thing a new player sees when they get into the game, and on the cover of most 40k products that aren't army-specific. The humble battle-brother is the most iconic unit in all of 40k, whether you like Marines or not.
