I am doing a Guardians of the Covenant themed army (Dark Angels successors) and would like some tips on painting robes a good looking black rather than a dull one.

My best guess at this would be to paint the entirety of the robes black and then do a series of slight highlights to give the robes some more depth.

Oh, and these robes are for my terminators, my regular marines do have the red robes.

You could try painting them in a dark grey and giving them successive washes of Badab Black, leaving them black in the recesses but leading up a gradual grey on the edges.

What i found works great is painting it black first, then a highlight of a mix of 1:1 Codex Grey and Shadow grey, then a light highlight of Spacewolf Grey.
It will get you this effect.

I just did yarrick's coat by starting at chaos black, then working up to a 1:1 mix of codex grey:chaos black i successive layers. Worked pretty nice. Give it an extreme edge highlight of codex grey for extra impact.
