This is my second tech building project in the works. Almost done, except for the painting.
Main body is a round plastic electrical box ($4) Most parts are "borrowed' from my kids Lego box which goes back like 20 years plus. To keep peace in the house, I made sure I checked with the kids first about what pieces I could use.
Still, I was short of certain parts. I went on eBay and for $2-3 bucks I ordered 10-20 of certain Lego pieces, such as the window shutters that make great grille vent panels (The green ones pictured), sloped vents, and what not. Just search under
"Lego parts". You'll have no problem finding what you need. Also look under
"Lego Technic". The flexible cables and hoses are perfect for this kind of project, so much better than straws. Most Lego plastic items can be cut very easily.
If you do this project, I recommend to use
blu-tac to experiment with positioning the pieces. During the build, I changed my mind several times, and removed super-glued items, once nicking my thumb very badly in the process (Ouch!). The blue plastic is very forgiving though, and excess glue can be scraped off with a hobby blade held perpendicular to the surface.
Also, very important--
Sand the areas on the blue plastic electric box where you plan to glue an item. The surface is very slick, and sanding will help the glued part adhere to it
I used a 1/16" Fiskar hole punch to add rivets for the top rim. With so many neat "tech" items to choose from the Lego pieces, it can be challenging to decide what goes on. It was a lot of fun cobbling the parts on. I tried to achieve a balance of symmetry with certain parts, as well as at random place pieces here and there to give it that Imperium Gothic tech look.
Found a purpose for my previous scratch built building: Comm Center
Radar tower courtesy of Star Wars found on eBay. Cost me $2 plus shipping.
I use blu-
tac to secure it. Makes it easier to assemble/disassemble for transport.
