First of all, I present to you Cyberdyne Yes folks, those maniacs have actually named a Robotics Company....Cyberdyne. Oh, and they even saw fit to name their 'robot suit'....Hal.
Next up, can any guess what the UK Military Satellite Network is called? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Skynet. No. Really. Skynet.
So, if you don't mind, I'll be in my cave, deep in a mountain somewhere, muttering about how the world used to be, and trying to stockpile stuff what will job giant killer robot stuffs.

I dont believe an AI would be particularly concerned with humanity. Also i dont think we would be stupid enough to try and destroy it if it did gain sentience.

Why would an AI not be particularly concerned with humanity? It's going to have the parameters of altruism or malevolence that we assign to it and if it has a will to survive and it's actually cognizant it's going to understand the importance of symbiosis between it and it's the hands that feed it.

Man, way to raise my hopes and dash them within the course of seconds.
Skynet totally predates Terminator. Looks like Cyberdyne was only founded in 2004 though...
Also, if you accept that computers could be robots, for contrived definitions of the term 'robot' anyway, then they've been learning from each other in the most basic of senses since the 60s when ARPANET was founded.

Just remember folks. Panic. Panic all the time. It's the only way to survive, other than just being mindful, of course-but geez, that's so friggin' boring. - Aegis Grimm

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.
