Would you still live the same lifestyle you do now? Would you be a rich snob? I always think about this. Like, I'll be wishing I had a thousand bucks to buy some 40k stuff, but then I'm like "lol, why would I buy that? I could get some expensive clothing". Luckily, I don't think I'll spontaneously turn rich any time soon

Anyway, gogogogo!

I dunno. I don't think I'd want a huge mansion, that'd be a tax nightmare and I don't have any use for it anyway. But I would want to move out, pay off all the family debts and get my own little place, probably about the same size as the home I'm currently living in. Then yeah, I'd probably live the same lifestyle, because I'm not one to start doing extravagant things just because I have money... never did in the past when I was earning a paycheck, but then I haven't earned a paycheck that's particularly shocking or large.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Depends what you mean by rich. I mean, if I were to suddenly come into cash (after taxes, natch), I would do the following:

$100,000: pay off student loans, bank the (depressingly small) remainder while keeping my job

$1,000,000: pay off loans, buy a car and house, invest, keep job

$10,000,000: try to set up some sort of fund where I can live off interest, quit job, have fun

$100,000,000+: Live increasingly lavishly

I don't see my situation changing until I can quit my job. I might buy a little more house, or a nicer car, but I'd keep most of the same lifestyle.

If I was rich enough, I have this strange idea of going into a GW store and clearing the shelves, just to blow a GW manager's mind.

Invest it, keep enough of the annual payoff to live in comfort (same as now, I’m happy) and spend the rest on bettering people’s lives (offering full scholarships to top graduates of my hometowns high school, making donations to the local school district, etc).

It goes without saying that at the same time I would amass a huge collection of 40K stuff.

I think I would have to go with this, though in £ rather than $

Though I think anything more than ~£20,000,000 would be super party time

If I was rich, I would still eat ramen noodles, hot dogs, and whatever (because I'm a lazy cook), still handroll my own cigs (because filters are for wimps), still drink cheap 40oz malt-liquor beers (because they are good), still have second hand furniture and clothes (because I don't care), and I would have a hell of a nice recording studio.

Retroactively applied infallability is its own reward. I wish I knew this years ago.

I'm both chaotic and orderly. I value my own principles, and am willing to go to extreme lengths to enforce them, often trampling on the very same principles in the process. At best, I'm heroic and principled; at worst, I'm hypocritical and disorderly.

I'd do what I do now except not save up as much.

I'd probably work out how much I can spend a year/month/day to make the fortune last a lifetime.

And bank it to get interest.

I'd get myself a regular sized house in a nice neighbourhood and try to live as normal of a life as possible, whilst having vast reserves of wealth just in case. I've no interest in having a swimming pool or a country mansion, a helicopter or umpteen cars; i'd be fine with a nice Jaguar and that's it car-wise.

I can't actually think of much that I could use a lot of money for bar paying off any bills, buying myself a house and a Jag and propping up my folks.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. I like the brackets from a previous quote.

$100,000: pay off student loans, bank the (depressingly small) remainder while keeping my job

$1,000,000: pay off loans, buy a car and house, invest, keep job

$10,000,000: try to set up some sort of fund where I can live off interest (50k/year more than enough with no house payment), quit job to either go back to school or found my own company.

$100,000,000+: Can't ever see myself spending more than 200k/year on myself, and even that would be difficult with a house that's paid off. That leaves a lot of spare cash that I have no personal use for, but there are all kinds of ways it can be put to use to make more money and/or help other people. I would actually end up working more if I was rich than I do now with my 40 hours/week job.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Somewhere in south-central England.

It depends what you call rich.

If I won £1 million now, I could retire, pay off my mortgage, and take a part time job to keep me busy and bring in a bit of pin money.

It wouldn't put me into the international jet set.

If I won £10 million I could do a lot of fun things, but I doubt I could afford houses in Tokyo, London, Florence, the Cotswolds and New York.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Heck, i'd be happy with a few grand; enough for me to live off it for a few years and take a few IT courses; generally set myself up a bit more for entering a higher paid job early on when my reserves run dry.

When I was a kid, a few hundred dollars seemed like an astronomical amount of money. I plotted how I'd buy so many cool toys and have the time of my life.

In high school, I had a few hundred dollars to spend each paycheck. It took care of a few needs (clothes, movies, friends), but what I really needed was a few thousand to really have a good time.

In college I had a few thousand, literally overnight! Except that had to be paid out for rent, books, food, and if I was lucky, a mini or two. What I really needed was a job that paid me tens of thousands, then I wouldn't have to worry.

Now I've got a mortgage and a family (including a crumb cruncher) to provide for. Also an occasional sanity-restoring vacation (Disney World shouldn't count for this) and car payments.

I have a feeling that even people making $2-300k per year don't consider themselves 'rich'.

If I had a million dollars tho, then I'd really be set...

What gets me is the fact that things like houses actually work out cheaper for rich people because they can buy them without a mortgage. Us poor people end up paying hundreds of thousands more just because we can't afford to buy it straight off.

Anyways... I'd settle for £1 million. I'd pay off the mortgage/debts, buy two more homes for the kids so that they don't become mortgage slaves, shove the remainder in the bank and carry on working.

I believe I've already answered this question another thread. Something about an equal number of $1 hookers... Seriously though, I'd hire a financial adviser first thing. Next up would be cocaine for about a week solid, followed up by presecheduled rehab. After that, hopefully I'd have the drive to do something involving music and not stagnate. Even if I was lazy for a year or two I can't believe that I'd let myself sit around doing nothing, even if just for the OCD.
