Ok sorry if this is in the wrong spot, but i looked everywhere.

here is my dilemma, I have a board, 6'x4'... decided to cut that into 3 2x4 pieces.. and i hinged them together using piano hinge. now its tiny enough ( 1 1/2" ) each piece, and there are 4 of them.. due to the fact that i further cut the wood into 6 2x2 pieces and hinged the bottom of the other half so now i have collapsible board 2'x2' and only 1 1/2 " thick. so that rocks when i want to take my warhammer on the road (you know to a buddies house or something)

now question... anyone got any ideas on how i am going to hid those 4 tiny hinges? and please don't say terrain pieces, thats obvious. what i am doing is spray painting the entire board with a stone texture paint, then go over it again in white in most spots, to get a winter rock feel. do you guys think the paint will be enough to hide them? or is there something i should do first to further hide these hinges?

just fishing for ideas here , thanks!

I dont' know what you want to use the board for (Fantasy or 40K), but could you use the hinges instead of concealing them? Have you considered painting them like blast doors or bomb shelter doors or something like that?

Alternatively, if they are ferrous metal, you could put some scenery on magnets (like trees) and stick them over the hinges, which would further disguise them.

As another alternative, get some good tape (duct tape, maybe) and cover the hinges and flock the tape. The flock will eventually wear down, being flexed all the time, but then you can either replace the flock, or peel off the tape and do the same with a new piece.

you could incorporate them into the board itself. Perhaps make a road, where the hinges are "speed bumps" or something like that.

I guess I'm not totally grasping your description. Why are the hinges attached to the playing side of the board?

Take a Terminator (1.5") Base and paint the bottom a brown color and use green flock or sand to match the terrain on top, bossibly a small bush or reeds. Then when ready just pop the base over the hinges and... done.

I assume the hinges are on the playing side in order to allow the whole thing to collapse a certain way. My visualization might be totally off, but you might be able to use recessed hinges. That is, carve away the board with a dremel or some such tool to fit the hinge plates and the actual "round"part of the hinge as well. You could paint/flock over the hinges and the cylinder of the hinge would be flush with the table?

Hard to say without pics.

Try and move them to the non playing surface and see of you can still collapse it the way you like.

all these are good suggestions.

as for why they are on the playing side is its the only way to create a connected collapsible 6 piece board.

no i can't recess the hinge, for its a piano hinge, and the board is only 1/4 inch thick.

my plan (based of the first responding post) is to incorporate them into the 40k experience, as 4 small trap doors, who knows, they may even end up being an objective in a game or two.

or i may do the base covering idea posted by Conner, since i do have a few extra big bases hanging around from unmade ripper swarms... or maybe both, can anyone suggest a small enough piece of terrain idea for an arctic tundra?

i like the road idea too, since there are 4 of them (small hinges) i might want to use a different idea for all, to make it look less static and obvious

its yet unpainted , and wont be for another day or two, so please, keep the idea coming in, this is really helpful
and when i've got it completed i'll post some pics so you can see what i have done, maybe make a travel friendly space saving board of your own!

Arctic tundra... cotton wool snowdrifts?

Snowy fuselage from some crashed ship? Personally, I would just do the base covering thing.

Take the hinges out and grab a cheap rotary tool, a dremmel or some such, or even a chisel. and recess them. Woodfill/sliver of wood over the top and sand to a finish.

Might be an idea to get bigger hinges, as piano hinges tend to shear easily when there's any kind of torsion, which on that board I'm assuming there will be. At least one of those hinges is going to be perpendicular to the others, not a problem stacked flat, but up against a wall...
