A typical situation:
A SM Vulkan list with 3 TH/SS Termies. This makes them Master crafted.
9 attacks on the charge. Do you roll all 9 dice together, then pick out 3 misses to reroll, or roll each model seperate with a distinct MC reroll per figure?
The total number of hits can be dramatically different.
Assume the 1st case: 6 hits, 3 misses. 3 rerolls (1 per model) with 2 made. 8 total hits.
2nd case: 1st and 2nd model gets 3 hits each. 3rd model whiffs. Gets 1 reroll and misses again. 6 hits total.

What would be the correct way to handle this scenario?

You would have to split up each ones attacks in this case, you can't roll all the dice and then take your re rolls if its supposed to be one reroll per weapon.

Yeah, roll each "dude's" attack separately in that instance. Master Crafted will only generate one reroll within a distinct set of attacks, so for example:

Say 4 of 5 TH/SS Vulkan terminators hit with all their attacks, and the 5th guy misses with all of his. Your best possible outcome should be 12/15 initial --> 13/15 final hits.

But lets say that instead, 3 out of the 5 terminators each miss one hit, and the other two make all of theirs. Now, your best possible outcome will be 12/15 initial --> 15/15 final hits, since each attacker gets a master crafted reroll.

Having dealt with this myself - I recommend getting yourself some coloured dice organised (different colour for each guy) so you can roll them together otherwise it can get pretty slow.

There's a couple of folks on ebay that will sell you dice with your choice of colour mix.

You can also get Packs of 10 Dice in paired separate colors at most dollar stores, 2 clear, 2 red, 2 Blue, 2 yellow, 2 green; so 2 dollars would get you 20 dice, 4 in each color, they are also fairly transparent, larger than most game dice, and slightly rounded edges so can be easily distinguished from your regular dice of any given color.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

Why re-roll separate if they are all identical?
Is this a rule or a custom?

It's a rule of master crafting.

Master crafting allows the bearer of the master crafted weapon the ability to reroll one failed to-hit
It does NOT allow the unit as a whole to reroll a hit per MC weapon.

As such, in the exact same way you need to know WHICH Plasma gunner rolled overheat, as that is the only one that can die, you need to know if each model failed a to-hit roll.

For example - a model rolling 4,4,4 (assuming WS4 vs WS4, for ease) would not be eligible for ANY reroll at all - they did not miss. But if the other 5 guys missed 6 times, rolling as a group would make you think you could reroll 6 dice. Now, this is against the rules - you are rerolling someones "misses" twice, not the once that is allowed
