Hmmm, might give this episode a miss to be honest. I really like the show and have listened to every episode, but this one sounds a bit boring!

Anything that seems to imply that Raef is in touch with higher powers freaks us out.

And yeah, you have until midnight Tuesday (GMT) to get your Survive! contest entries is. So get to it and good luck!

Dear D6G,

I want to echo all the things that Angelo said regarding the D6G at the end of his interview. I cannot thank you enough for the great content that you deliver every two weeks and more so now thanks to the lost chapters. I really enjoy the hard work that you all do as gamers and for the gamer community.

I appreciate the time you take out of your lives to put on a great show and even to respond to an occasional email I might drop your way. It was a pleasure to meet you all at Templecon, up until that point I would have sworn Raef was a cartoon....(kidding!)

So for all your hard work I salute you!

Another great episode....
I have not finished Nicole's interview yet because I stopped at the part where I found out there were Vampire Ninja's and now I am looking for these books!

Thanks
Joel

Hey, Jon, glad you found us! If you do a quick search at the top of the page for "The D6 Generation" it'll give you a bunch of hits that are all partial posts, but at the end of each partial it gives you the option to 'view whole post' or 'view whole thread', if you go to that it will give you the entire thread from that episode and you can respond and it will rise to the top of the 'Discussion' part of the forum, where they are all still located.

Thanks for the very kind words, Joel! It's posts like yours, and experiences like TempleCon and meeting Angelo, that keep this fun, and keep us coming back for more!

I gotta say, you'd be missing out! I just listened to the interview with Angelo Lombardi and it was a hoot! I wanna game with this guy!

...and, sigh, more Merchants & Marauders references guys? You're killin' me! I can't wait 'til I can afford to pick this game up!

Besides what Craig suggested you can also click on Russ's user profile to be taken to his user profile page and then click on the 'threads posted by this user' link. You'll then see a list of all of Russ's threads, which are mainly D6G announcement threads.

But personally I just tend to make my comments about old shows into the newest thread...although certainly you don't have to do that if you don't want.

Put in mine already although I was working off of half-remember information from when I used to play the game back in the 80's. Hopefully it does not ruin the gags. Now for the long wait. I can listen to a four-hour episode gamer tort reform with no problem, but I get giddy like a 6 month old Laborador Retreiver waiting for the contest results. Clearly I need to cut back on the caffine.

Angelo was a blast-hearing how others find time for everything is very rewarding and it was a great interview. It really rocks that he is free to be himself at his job. Of course it did not hurt that he gave as good as any of you. I understand that the interview was actually an hour longer but everything immediately following comments regarding Russ were lost due to some strange digital error in editing.

I think what made this episode unusual was how short the game review seemed compared to other reviews in the past; it is a relatively simple game and did not require the usual hour plus breakdown. I think it is also one of the highest rated you have all ever done.

Finished the episode today.

I already commented how fun the interview with Angelo was. Great stuff. The review for Survivor put that on my radar (but, not until after I can afford Merchants & Marauders!) We've got a 6 yr old (going on 16) daughter that we've been starting to play games with and this sounds like it could be a lot of fun to play with the family.

Craig's latest Do You Ever Notice resonated. I'm like the concept of the hero, and am not a fan of nihilism nor desconstructionism. Like Raef, I'm a comic reader and I've lately found that I enjoy stories from 'back in the day' far more than most of the current output with it's cynicism and deconstructionist outlook. I want Superman to be Superman and do the right thing because it's the right thing to do and be the shining example of what it means to be a HERO. I don't need, no want, Superman to be grim & gritty. Heck, anything BUT! It drives me nuts that so many covers portraying Superman these days seem to show him angry with red heat-vision eyes a blarin'...

yuck.

I believe in the hero...both in the fiction I prefer to enjoy AND in the real world. Humanity is a mess, but there is the occasional individual who rises up to say ENOUGH! Thank God for that!

So, good episode all around, folks. The only problem is...it's over and now begins the wait for the next episode! ;-)

And, to echo Angelo...THANK YOU for all that you guys (and gal) do for the gaming community. It is appreciated!

Great episode as usual. Excellent review on Survive: Escape from Atlantis!. Agreed on the 3+ with a re-roll.
Much better than many of the video reviews on BGG I have seen. Katie and I had a good laugh listening.

We spiral outwards when placing Land tiles as well. It seems to be the most consistent method we have found so far.

We have been playing it a lot as a 2 player game and is a bit more strategic than the 4 player game where any plans you have get thrown to the wind as half of your people are consumed before it's your turn again. 4 player is a ton more fun though. The language at the table with 4 players will make a pirate blush.

I never had the opportunity as a kid to play it in the 80's for some reason. After doing some research, I recently bought the 1996 Waddingtons/Hasbro International version of Escape from Atlantis from eBay.UK and then bought the Stronghold games reprint.

While I think Stronghold games did an exemplary job in printing the game, where the quality catches the best of all worlds (components, rules, graphic design quality) I think I prefer the Waddingtons edition more due to the massive amount of overproduction included in the game. It just screams to be painted.

I mention this only because of the Rapidfire question about what popular theory regarding where Atlantis is actually located.

The Waddingtons edition has tiles and other components that seem to be distinctly Pelasgian. The tiles especially seem to be very similar to the architecture found currently on the island of Santorini/Thera. When trying to figure out how to paint them, I just referred to the fabulous pics of that island.
Holding the tiles in hand that Stronghold games incorporated really adds a bit of strategy and "Take that!" to the mechanics of the game, so in order to play the game as Stronghold games had implemented it, I had to make some custom cards as well continuing with the Greek theme.

The game has great mechanics that can lend itself easily to being re-themed by particularly creative gamers. Frank Herbert's Dune comes readily to mind. 'Escape from Arrakeen' during the Harkonnen invasion or whathaveyou. In fact, I would go so far as to say that with a better thematic implementation, this game would be an even bigger hit than it already is.

Survive! was definitely a game made many years before it's time. I am glad that Stronghold games made the decision to go ahead and reprint this schadenfreude masterpiece.

Now after listening to Ep74, I feel quite silly about posting this. Its like you took a time machine to the future and tried to warn us not to bother contacting you guys to tell you about this and I missed your dire portents...

Sorry!

And I'm glad you guys liked Survive! I was worried that you might find it to 'simple' but I should have realized it would be a huge hit with your families as it was with mine when I was a youth.

We still have the original version, but I'm definitely going to get the new version. I can't wait to see my Sister's expressions at the next holiday when I show it to them!

The one thing I'd say is that Stronghold's website is absolutely terrible. Not only does it not have a non-flash backdoor in case you want to browse it via a device that doesn't support flash, but finding your way to their store is completely counter-intuitive and once you get to the store they have NO PICTURES.

Not all of us want to go to board game geek (I hate board game geek's site design too). I can't believe they're selling product without ANY PICTURES OF THEIR GAME on their site besides the cover art!

How can they spend all that money on the components and then completely drop the ball on their online sales interface?

SO TRUE! After listening to the show I went to their website and was extremely disappointed. I don't have access to board game geek at work and I couldn't find many images of the new game on Google so I was extremely frustrated.

I love BGG as a great resource tool, but intuitive it aint.

The user interface stinks to high heaven. BGG is more likely to scare off new hobbyists as it is to attract them. The front page is information overload to the uninitiated.

It literally took me years to be able to comfortably navigate that site and I still don't know the majority of its features.

It's too bad that Stronghold rely so heavily on BGG to advertise their wares.

Thanks for the kind words folks, and Hellfurry, thanks for background info on the 90's version. I wasn't aware of that and I have to say I DO like the Atlantis theme on the plastic bits.

If you'd like a nice overview of the game, with good pic of components, on a non-flash page, our friends at GameSalute.com have a great one:

Yak: We love it when people let us know about news we might have missed. It was just amazing how much feedback we got so quickly. I'm not sure anyone but Granger saw this coming and we (collectively) were shocked.

Craig -

Regarding your "Didya Ever Notice", and the "fanfic" LOTR from Sauron's point of view - this was done professionally a few years ago. An author by the name of Jaqueline Carey wrote two novels - "Banewreacker" and "Godslayer" that are supposedly LOTR told from Sauron's point of view. They aren't actually Tolkien's characters, but apparently it's fairly obvious. None other than George R.R. Martin gave them a favorable review, which you can read on his website here: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/reading.html - scroll down about halfway, he "reviewed" them in 2007. I have not read those books, though I've read some of Jaqueline Carey's other works - her main "Kushiel" books are pretty good, in my opinion, as long as you don't mind some R-(or even X-)rated sex scenes.

Now, speaking of George R.R. Martin, I kinda blasted him in these forums a few episodes ago. However, I mainly have a problem with him trying to nickel and dime his fans, and question whether he's "lost the muse" for ASOIAF. I love the books, and agree with your assessment that they are not nihilistic. I'm also excited to say that when I went to his website to grab the link above, I checked in on his "Not a Blog", and at long last there is an official publication date for "A Dance With Dragons" - July 12, 2011 - which is earlier than I was expecting at this point. I figured he'd announce he was done, and it would be 9-12 months before it was published. Hopefully the next one won't take 5+ years...

Enjoyed the episode and am thinking about sending Angelo an email (if I can find it), we have a La Quinta here in Paso Robles but no game store so if he's ever out here, I can get him some games.

As for Craig's "Do you ever notice?" segment. I enjoyed listening to his thoughts, and would love to have a long discussion about it if I ever meet him, I enjoy a lot of the stories he tends to dislike and I don't think it's a bad thing to have some stories where there really isn't a "hero."

Craig re your squats.

Don't forget that Epic A has the 'counts as' rule. In the UK a player has used a full squat army as both marines and imperial guard in different events.

So you could use the squats you've purchased in any list you think they will fit. But check with the tournament organizer of course

I'd like to echo this sentiment, very much so! I also apologise for my rather negative attitude earlier, and just want to say that I was indeed very surprised. A very inspiring and heartfelt interview. Great show guys. I'm sorry I doubted you. I really do appreciate the sheer effort and personal sacrifice that goes into what you do, and am greatful for it every time your shows get me through a hard day at work or a rubbish commute.

Ozy: That's the great thing about the world, right? Although it doesn't take all kinds, we are here, and we all like different stuff Saying I have to have 'heroes' in all my stories sounds simplistic, but what can I say? I'm a classicist at heart. On the other hand, I was watching Cloverfield yesterday, loving it, and then it ended and I was like "Holy crap . . . the 'heroes' didn't win . . . everyone died no matter the sacrifices they made . . . and I like it . . . " So even I'm not as simple as I seem

Mephy: GREAT point! I wish I'd thought of that before I went and painted an entire second wave of IG! Hm . . . I'll have to start looking at those two lists and try to come up with some ideas . . .

Joel: No worries, man! We knew you'd come around

Thanks to everyone for their kind words. It's what keeps us doing what we're doing!
