Subject: Tau- Probably obvious questions...
|
 |

So I'm new to Warhammer in general, I started playing about 3 or so weeks ago with friends (also new to the game), and I am curious about several things pertaining to Tau (which are probably obvious to the experienced). I've looked through the codex and the rulebook, but between my personal inability to understand the 40k lingo and my friends all having different opinions on how to interpret the rules, I come to you, the experienced players of Dakka Dakka, for answers. Again, I'm a newb and a Tau player, Be gentle xD
Questions:
1. Jetpacks allow units to move 6" in the assault phase... If I've already shot this still applies right?
2. Is this how a jet packed units turn would go? Move 6->shoot or run 6---> then either assault or move 6?
3. If I'm shooting at someone with a markerlight, do they get a coversave against it or is that just against things that wound?
4. If burst cannons (5-5 Ass 3) are twin linked do i get to re-roll all misses for the 3 shots?
5. A friend tells me that my Crisissuit's can fire 2 weapons a turn. There is a upgrade for CS's called multi-tracker that lets them shoot 2 weapons a turn... I'm assuming my friend is wrong and in order to fire both weapons I need to have a multi tracker?
6. If I move a unit, (say a kroot) 6" in my movement phase with a rapid fire weapon, does he still get 2 shots in the shooting phase or only 1 because he moved?
7. What's the deal with Target Lock? Does it work w/o fail, does it fail w/o working? Is there a new Target Priority Test?
I could use all the help I can get... Thanks :O)

1. Jetpacks allow units to move 6" in the assault phase... If I've already shot this still applies right?
Yes, you can pop in LOS, fire, and then move back in again, it's damn annoying!
2. Is this how a jet packed units turn would go? Move 6->shoot or run 6---> then either assault or move 6?
I think you need the break off rule to be able to leave CC, jump pack or not.
4. If burst cannons (5-5 Ass 3) are twin linked do i get to re-roll all misses for the 3 shots?
Yup, you get to re-roll them all once
5. A friend tells me that my Crisissuit's can fire 2 weapons a turn. There is a upgrade for CS's called multi-tracker that lets them shoot 2 weapons a turn... I'm assuming my friend is wrong and in order to fire both weapons I need to have a multi tracker?
I belive you do need multitracker, yes
6. If I move a unit, (say a kroot) 6" in my movement phase with a rapid fire weapon, does he still get 2 shots in the shooting phase or only 1 because he moved? You can only fire it once, up to 12"

Wrong on the rapid fire answer. If you moved a mini with rapid fire, it can still shoot 2 shots at 12 inches. If you dont move the mini with rapid fire, you can EITHER shoot 1 shot at 24 (or 30 in the Fire warriors case) or shoot the 2 shots at 12 inches. Automatically Appended Next Post: Thought Id add some page numbers in the rule book for ya
The rapid fire page is 28
For jump troops yours will be pg52. Specifically your reading the box on the bottom that says Jet Packs itll explain all to you there.

To number 7: Target Priority Tests have been removed, it was a quick Ld. test you took to fire at something that was a not the closest target if I recall correctly, and what made Tau cool was that they could skip those tests entirely.

2) weird answer...
A jetpacker may move, shoot and assault, because he is 'relentless' (see rulebook, means you can move and shoot heavy/rapid fire weapons at full effect).
However, a suit isn't allowed to run and assault, because you need the 'fleet' rule to do so. Vespid are the only Tau unit with that rule.
Suits can (due to relentless) move and still choose the rapid fire type (single shot or double at 12 inch range). Kroot cannot, ofc.
No unit ever gets a coversave against a markerlight because it doesn't wound, and if it hits the bush next to you, a broadside shot will still screw you anyway ^^

1) that is correct
2) also correct. it's either assault or move the 6"
3) no, they don't get a cover save because the marker light doesn't cause a wound to save.
4) yes, all the shots may be rerolled if they miss.
5) you need the Multi-tracker to shoot 2 weapons. your friend probably always faced someone who took Multi-trackers and so though they could always shoot 2 weapons.
6) Rapid fire weapons(as detailed on the page King Kracker gave you) do the exact opposite. if you remain still, you shoot 1 shot up to maximum range. if you move you can shoot 2 shots up to half range. if the enemy is within half range you can remain still and shoot 2 shots.
7) Target priority is an old rule from last edition. the bearer of the Target Lock can shoot at a different unit from the rest of his unit as if he were seperate.

Rapid fire weapons do not fire 2 shots at "half range" they fire 2 shots at 12". Not everyone plays space marines.

1: Yup
2: Yes, you jump 6, shoot or run d6, and then assault or jump 6
3: You cannot take saves against something that doesn't cause wounds
4: Yes, twin linked weapons re-roll all shots that miss
5: Multi-trackers are required to shoot both weapons on a suit, so yes you need them if you want to shoot both.
6: Shooting is worked out from distance and movement restrictions. If you are staying still and a enemy unit is 8 away, then those at 12 and under away from them have rapid fire, however if your unit moved in the same example, then only those 12 or under away from the enemy can fire.
7: It just lets the owner fire at a different target than the rest of the unit. Target priority doesn't exist anymore.

No, I am right, you aren't reading it properly. He is saying if the kroot move 6", do they still get all their normal shots, and the answer is no, they can only fire once up to 12" if they move.

Whaaaaat???
Rapid fire always shoots 2 shots up to 12", moving or not.
if the model didn't move they can shoot 1 shot at 12" to max range.

Sorry, stupid me, I think I am quoting 4 ed. My 5 ed. rulebook had a nasty encounter which I won't decribe, but it ended up charred and not too well. SO I still get mixed up with the 2

Just to clarify if you run the d6 during your shooting phase you may not assault...but you may still move 6" in the assault phase (assuming you don't move within 1" of an enemy model)

I agree with that. Specially for Tau. I think the "shooty" armies need some serious help in 5th and that would be a decent start for the Tau. Also, I still think they should get some type of rule, that when charged, if they pass a LD test, they can fire off a volley of shots BEFORE assaults are taken. That would help them out, and not take away from fluff by making them more assaulty or something lame.

Also guys, don't forget that units with Jet Packs count as Relentless so Crisis teams may always choose to fire once at full distance or Rapid Fire, regardless of distance moved.
Yes you need a Multitracker to fire more than one weapon.
Kroot can always, always shoot twice at 12". But they then can't Assault.
Target Locks, well, there's some debate. You have to pass a Target Priority Test to shoot at a different unit... but they no longer exist. Some people say you auto-pass and can shoot, others say you auto fail. Those people we put a dreadnought in a sock and club them 'til they agree.

Crisis suits are not relentless.
But they are close when Rapid fire weapons are used.
Their Jet-pack rules are more specific than the BRB's jetpack rules, and disallow move-and-fire or fire-and-assault with Heavy weapons(luckily they have no heavy weapons available).

Crisis suits ARE relentless: they do not the same named rule, so have BOTH the Relentless rule *and* their own rules. Unfortunately their rules remove some of the benefits of relentless...

OK nos you are technically correct(the best kind of correct).
but the same goes for a homeless man, without a Penny on him nor accessible calling himself a Millionaire because there is a trust that he can never access in his name that has millions of dollars in it. The end result is the same; he has to beg for enough change to eat.
Again tough the whole thing is academic; Crisis suits cannot gain access to heavy weapons(their marker drones are just jet-pack infantry and therefore fully relentless)
