Ork Boy Hangin' off a Trukk
|
Hello there, I am fairly new here (long time lurker and all those cliches) and has finally plucked up the nerve to show you my Bad Moons ORKS! Only very recently got into the hobby so C&C is muchly appreciated.
so without further ado,
My Warboss:
Made from a Mega Armoured Nob (Love those, I have three others), Black Orc Warboss, Ork Biker Bitz and Some others as well I think.
My Nobs:
(Minor Conversions in this mob i think)
(Camera Finally took some good shots with this one)
My Favourite Nob:
Up next is my trukk, unfortunately I did not build this and I didn't notice it was incorrectly built until after I had paid and taken it home, ah well. it's very orky.
Also Fully Painted I have 3 MAN, 3 Killa Kans (first models painted, you can tell), 8 (lovingly converted) Ard Boyz and Some Tankbustas.
Unpainted I have about 20 Boyz, another trukk and a Battlewagon, 6 Deffkoptas and 3 Warbikes.
God I need to get busy.
C&C welcome

I like where this is going. One bit of advice is to utilize washes or glazes and mix them into the layers of paint you're already using. Some people will tell you to go buy GW Devlan Mud but really all you need to do is mix a little bit of black with the brown you have been using. Maybe 1 part black to two parts brown and then add water to it, to thin it down. So, you would essentially want around a 6 to 1 water to paint ratio. Then get a little bit of the wash on your brush (careful not to use too much), you can always dab off the extra, and cover the entire model. Then go back and highlight using the colors you already used over the now washed surfaces. This will add a lot of depth to the details on your minis. Skin will look more vibrant, clothes will inheritly gather darker shadows in the folds, and so on. It will take a little practice, especially to get the ratios for your wash down, but once you feel comfortable, you can then decide if you want to buy washes or just keep making your own. But you'll find that cooler-toned washes (turqoise, blue, purple, etc) work well on human skin and metallics and reds and browns will really help dirty things up and pick out details on non-human skin.
It's all trial and error, for the most part. But keep at it and you'll be busting out stuff that will impress yourself.
On a side note an example of how I use washes on skin generally follows these steps
-Primer(white or black)
-Base (usually black and scorched brown mixed)
-wash (some darker wash, probably a brown)
-Go over all but the most recessed areas with the Base
-Mix in your light color(for caucasian flesh, most people will mix GW Bleached Bone into their Base mix) a little at a time, applying a coat with each highlight color you like, continually drawing away from those recessed areas.
-Before the final highlights, I tend to use another two washes, a cool tone around the eyes and a pink or red around the cheeks, if need be, and the lips.
-Then the final highlights. I usually stop at or just before I reach the color of Bleached Bone, but some people prefer to mix in some pure white for dramatic highlights.
If you have a lot of flesh showing, more washes may provide a better look, if you look at my P&M blog in my sig, the ork at the beginning probably had about 7 or 8 different layers of washes used, some brown, some black and some red.
Wow, that was really long-winded. I apologize for writing so much, but do think this advice will help you. If it doesn't.... well, then I'm just an

I use an almost excessive amount of Devlan Mud wash, unfortunately I have yet to figure out the good setting on my ridiculously expensive camera so it looks much brighter than it should
and yes Dr Pepper is AMAZING, just out of site is a bottle of Old Speckled Hen too

Hmm, if the prob is your camera, I would check two things:
1.) turn the flash off and try to use as much natural light as possible
2.) if your camera has an ISO setting, see if you can lower it. A lot of modern digital cameras have a wheel you can roll to scroll through pics or whatever, if you're ready to take a photo and you roll that wheel counter clockwise you should be able to adjust the ISO manually.

I think the flash kills the view of the models personally, some dark shots with a plain background would be handy From what I can see, it looks neat. Green is nice, could do with a Thraka Green wash. Yellows I'd actually say a Gryphonne Sepia wash to really sharpen that yellow hue. Could scruff up the plates abit with some drybrushing, but otherwise, neat start.

I like the truck, I'd recommend this for your ork skin:
Knarlock Green
Wash Thrakka Green
Block highlight muscles with Goblin Green
Block highlight interior of muscles with 50:50 mix of Goblin Green and Talarn Flesh
Yields this:

Very impressive Killamop, really like the look of your army, like the uniform appearance to your Moonz, with just the right amount of grime IMO. You'll probably get a bit of criticism for not removing mold lines or drilling gun barrels, I think the minis you've done so far look great, but something to consider for any additions to your army. Fab army though, I'm quite envious

everything looks great but my only suggestion would be to add some black details and stuff to the yellow armors, they look a bit plain as just straight yellow in my opinion but other than that everything looks awesome

Just say no to mold lines!
I really like the look and feel of your guys. Each one has character and a nice battle worn look. Their colors all look a bit dusty, as if they've been out in the desert for months killin' 'umies.
I also think you should put some bases more detailed bases on them! Just add a Thin layer of gravel and paint it with a base coat and then dry brush the top with a lighter color if you don't want to do more, but IMO a base makes a model look a lot more complete.
Your buggy looks fun. I'm excited to see more of that!

Honestly a lot more have been based since then, and I've repainted the Killa Kans to fit in more with my force. and rebased them.
and the buggy has been totally changed, I'll have to throw a pic up here later today to show you. Automatically Appended Next Post: And I haven't even shown you the rest of my Ard Boys! and the Nob!
Right I'm busting out the camera and the tripod today.

For the record, there is no "right" way to build an Ork vehicle.
Matter of fact, if you build all your Ork vehicles to the GW specs in the box, you more or less have missed the whole point of building an Ork army.
So, rest easy Badmoon Ork painting man, the Orks like their vehicles ramshackle and hate their vehicles all looking the same.
Lastly, extra credit for tackling Badmoons. Yellow is the hardest color to get good coverage on.

If you like ramshackle, your going to like my buggy, it's made out of a deffkopta, with a crude chassis made out of a boarding plan and sprues, the armour is made out of deffkopta blades, spare sprues and spare battlewagon pieces. and it had a gun from the Land Speeder kit.
at the moment it has no back wheel, and honestly I don't think it needs one
