Subject: First serious attempt at Tyranid list, 750 points - Main enemy: IG

Hello, Dakka!
I've dabbled around with the Tyranid codex for a while and just had the time to make some first lists and playtest them against my mechanized IG. I usually play with a friend of mine on very low point levels, so 750pts is our usual level.
At first I tried some deep-strikey stuff, Trygon and a Lictor, trying to stab the enemy in the back. Then I realized...it won't be before Round Three that I have the antitank CC goodness of those units in active combat. The logical result was: Chimeras and a Vendetta cut everything apart, starting with the Tervigon I had. Big massacre.
Then I changed the list drastically into the following:
HQ:
Tyranid Prime
- Pair of Boneswords
- Adrenal Glands
Elite:
Venomthrope
3 Hive Guard
Troops:
3 Tyranid Warriors
- Venom Cannon
- Adrenal Glands
Hormagaunt Brood (12)
Termagant Brood (12)
Tervigon
Ripper Swarm Brood (3)
...and the list did much better. I realized that Hive Guard are the Hive Mind's best idea since sliced Guardsmen. Those guys popped two Chimeras and a Vendetta and if they didn't destroy something outright, the shook it into uselessness. The Tervigon was therefore not the only dangerous target anymore, lived longer and spawned a boatload of gants. This list took apart my Mech-Guard astonishingly well - maybe luck, but nevertheless impressive to me.
So I thought I'd go to Dakka and ask you guys what you think of it! Comments? Critique? Where are the weaknesses?

There are several things wrong with your list that i feel could be copmletly changed, althought i dont usually post my copmettitive lists, here is an alteration of my 500 point list with comments below, Enjoy.
The Most Badass Tyranid 750 List in the history of Mankind.
HQ
Tervigon – Cluster Spines / Catalyst 175
Elite
Doom of Malan’tai – 90
Hive Guard x3 - 150
Troop
Termagaunt x10
Tervigon – Cluster Spines / Adrenal Glands – 160
Fast Attack
Gargoyl x 18
748 Points
The plan is to have 2x X gaunts spawning each turn, then one of the tervigons will have Adrenal Glands which will pump up my nearby gaunts to S4 which I will be able to glance tanks with, Also I have catalyst which will allow my Doom of Malan’tai to get FNP rule which will make him incredibly hard to kill with a 3+ invunreble save as well, the 2 tervigon are also W6 and the doom average about W6 as well. Once the DoM gets rolling, which he should considering he will have FNP and 3+ invulnerable my plan is to either take out high Toughness units (which there shouldn’t be in 750 points) or to either drop a large blast template with him, remember this strength 4+ and AP 1 so is can lay the hurt very easily. With both the Tervigons having cluster spines I should be able to drop some pretty serious large blasts considering it is 750 points, along with the DoM aswell. Having 2 tervigons will also give me a big model advantage as they spawn units, even If they both get double numbers the first turn I am still left with monstrous creatures that can lay serious hurt in 750 points.
C&C welcome.
Thanks, Dave_Nz

There's the slight problem with your list that the doom of malan'tai is utterly useless against any opponent that knows what they're doing.

Requia has a good point on this one.
Dont have my dex at hand, but i believe he is low T.
and against guard, its only going to take a few shots to drop him from the table, and guard mass those weapons and with good range.
Not to mention that even without ID, shooting something as weak as doom doesent take long.
While i dont usually use them, something like a mawloc would work well against guard.
Emerge and do some damage, then burrow again, or rush into armour.
A trygon would do better at the assaulting, but costs more and doesent get emerge damage.

On the list in the Op:
Why ripper swarms, especially such a small group of them?
Pretty sure you;; get more out of either rending claws or deathspitters than adrenal glands on the warriors. A group of three warriors with no prime isn't going to last long (ID problems) and I assume that the prime is going to be preventing ID on the venomthrope?

3 warriors is too small a brood. I think you need at least 4 and if you attach the prime then he needs a shooting attack as well otherwise you don't get full utility from him.
I'd also drop the venomthrope and have 2 broods of 2 hive guard - that way they can kill two chimeras a turn and not just the one.
Drop the ripper swarm and trim guants down to 10 to claim a few points back. Tervigon needs to have AG and toxin for boosting guants.
