Although I understand that the WYSIWYG rules are much more lenient in Fantasy than 40k I have a few concerns.

If an opponent were to field a unit clearly modeled with spears however wished to use the unit as armed with HW&S would you allow it in a tournament?

I am tweaking a list for an upcoming tournament and i would like to use a unit of skeletons with HW&S however they are modeled with spears. I do not have the time to remodel them with sword and board or collect a new unit so I am wondering if this will be an issue. I will probably contact the TO in the next few days however I wanted to gather a few opinions first.

Thanks

Do I look like a guy with a plan?

I wouldn't do it, but I have to say we allow it at our tournaments. Main reason being we have such small turnouts, and we want to generate more interest. Nobody has ever complained. Like always though you should ask this question to the TO before showing up with them modeled wrong to avoid in problems.

Even if the TO said it's cool I'd still mark the "counts as" units with those little colored dot stickers you get at office supply shops, just so that your opponent knows they're different. Just so that there's no arguement and you can have a healthy game.

Most tournaments have their own WYSIWYG rules, so you would likely be in breach.

Just ask the TO. Only answer we can give that is any actual use.

On a general note:

Afaik a unit is WYSIWYG in Fantasy if at least half of the unit is equipped correctly. Or at least it was in 7th.

That being said: Ask the TO

There doesnt appear to be a similar rule in 8th - or at least not one I could find.

As it has been said before ask the TO if their is a wysiwyg rule. Even though their isn't a rule like it in the rule book a lot of tournaments have a wysiwyg rule to save confusion.

At a bare minimum (unless proxying for test/friendly games), have the front rank be armed as the unit should be. It makes it a lot easier to tell what has what, and also cuts down on having to but 8 bajillion models to run the same unit equipped slightly different.

I suggest you don't believe anything posted by thedarkavenger unless confirmed by other regular posters here at Dakka. He has shown he is incapable of basic English comprehension.

Personally, I'd only allow it if there were NO units with spears in the list to avoid confusion. No "this unit of spear models has spears, but this one doesn't".

If I were you(or your opponent), I'd snip off the tops of the spear from the model(and maybe most of the bottoms, too), and add on a sword/axe/whatever to the remaining haft.

Typically what I see on forums is the general comments is 51% of a unit has to be made with the equipped item. To be completely honest I personally would be cool with anything, but would prefer for the first rank to have the correct item equipped so I can actually see it.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Most folk are pretty okay with any substitutes, as long as it's clear during play. So if every spear armed unit was turned into a hand weapon armed unit, I think most people would be okay with it.

But tournament organisers aren't most people. They're often looking to create a higher standard of game, and that means units looking like what they're supposed to. They're also keen to avoid confusion and disagreement, and that can mean removing possible issues that can come from people not having WYSIWYG.

So really, all you can do is ask the tournament organiser, and see if you can come up with a solution. If he's not okay with it, ask if changing the front rank to hand weapons would help.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

For my orc boys I have some orcs built with HW and shield, spears and shield and 2 hand weapons. what I like to do is fill the front ranks with boys that have weapons that represent the rest of the unit, so I could run big units of them without having to worry about them all having the same weapon.
