Sunday, February 27th the Toledo game room had a fantastic 1000 point doubles 40k tournament. My partner and I went 2 and 1 on the day and, as it was my partner’s first 40k tournament, I’d say it was a success. There’s one area in which I have to vent however. Maybe it’s whining, and perhaps this topic will get locked and/or deleted for not having direct relevance to 40k.

To one member of my first opposing team – in over a decade of enjoying this hobby and countless tournaments, you are by far the worst opponent I have ever played against.

I was willing to forgive your habit of misinterpreting the rules in your favor EVERY time a rules dispute came up. Maybe you just didn’t know the rules very well or haven’t played in a long while. It happens. I’m glad we could resolve the rules disputes equitably by reading the rule book and asking rules authorities around us for assistance… but I might suggest, in the future, you take on a more compromising demeanor. It is somewhat irksome to me when someone who doesn’t know the rules very well argues with such confidence about his position.

There is a difference between; “You’re transport was destroyed? Oh! NICE! Everyone inside needs to take a pin test and takes a strength 4 hit and is in dangerous terrain.”, and “I think there is a number of negative results that occur to units embarked in a transport but sometimes I get the results for exploded and destroyed mixed up.”

There is also a difference between; “A defiler is a walker. That means it can fire its battle cannon and all other weapons.”, and “Does firing an ordinance weapon prevent my Defiler from firing other weapons even though it’s a walker?”

There is also a difference between; “Your Raider isn’t an assault vehicle so you can’t assault on the same turn you disembark.”, and “Does a raider have something special about it that allows units to assault on the same turn they disembark?”

I think many players less willing to stand their ground against you might interpret your demeanor as brow-beating. It’s ok to speak and even argue with confidence, but the game might be more enjoyable to all parties if you present your position in a more compromising tone.

I was also willing to forgive you misreading my and my partners dice on numerous occasions. I’m sure from over 4 feet away, 3’s and 2’s look like 5’s and 6’s on leadership tests, 4’s and 5’s look like 1’s and 2’s on to-hit and to-wound rolls. I’m not one to recommend glasses to anyone but it might help.

I was also willing to forgive your position that my partners Dreadnought, who only had his arm visible to the shooting unit, wouldn’t get a cover save. I’ll admit, the line of sight was a little tricky being that there were all sorts of buildings and a giant Defiler we had to try and see through. But I might also suggest that a Soul Grinder who only has a single back left leg in flat difficult terrain, with the entire rest of the model visible to the firing unit might not get cover. Just a thought…

I’m also willing to forgive your stalling. To me, it seemed like stalling, but you could just be a slow player or a slow reader or both. Not holding it against you… just suggesting you might want to speed things up in future games.

But one area that I’m not really willing to forgive is the rules dispute we had at the end of the game. When my Wracks were in difficult terrain attempting to assault your Plaguebearers and I rolled a 5, it really looked like I was well within 5 inches. I measured, re-measured, then measured again and it was definitely within 5 inches. My partner measured and agreed. I understand that you want to do your own measuring in that situation but here’s the problem… You admitted to bumping my model back when you went in to measure. In most cases a good sportsman might say something to the effect of “it looked to me like the 5 inches was questionable but I bumped your model back. I’m sorry – you can take the assault. I wish I hadn’t done that.” But instead, you measured from where the model was bumped too, and exclaimed “I only bumped that model by like a ‘SHORT hair’, there’s no way you were within 5 inches.”

I’m not sure a ‘C-U-N-7 hair’ is an accurate unit of measurement but I digress… when I explained that you bumped my model and that, before the model was bumped, I was within 5 inches you responded by shouting “BULL CRAP!”. I then asked how we should resolve the issue and you replied “There’s nothing to resolve. This is BULL CRAP!” I then said that the issue needed to be resolved and I wasn’t willing to simply say my assaulting unit wasn’t within 5 inches, to which you replied by shouting “BULL CRAP!”

The tournament organizer had, by this time, come by to investigate why someone was on the brink of an emotional collapse screaming “BULL CRAP!” over and over again suggested we roll a die. On a 4 or better, I get my way, on a 3 or less, you get yours. Doesn’t entirely seem fair to me but there’s no other way to resolve this. I rolled, got a 2, and your Plaguebearers live to fight another day.

By the end of the game I started to think that you were less frustrated with the fact that you were losing and more frustrated with the fact that I stood my ground against you. Perhaps you’re used to playing opponents who are intimidated by you or unwilling to stand their ground. Whatever the case, I hope you look back on our game and ask yourself; “Is this the proper way to conduct myself?”

If the answer to that question is anything but “HELL no” I might also suggest you look into some sort of home for the long-term. 40k is just a game and I pegged you at about 35 years old. We’re never too old to play games but 35 is about 25-years past the time when you should be conducting yourself in that way.

My only regret was that scoring you the worst possible sportsmanship meant your partner, who seemed like a cool enough guy, had to suffer the same team score. I doubt that that same thought crossed your mind when you gave me the lowest score.

To my other opponents who kicked our butts game 2 and who we narrowly beat game 3, was a blast guys. Hope to see you next time.

Wow, that seems like a really bad experience. I hate people like that. I really wish some people picked up the rulebook and actually read the thing from cover to cover.

Also freaking out about toy soldiers and yelling bull**** like that is pretty pathetic.

I like these kinds of post for two reasons. One, they're entertaining. Two, know-it-all jackasses almost certainly read forums like this, which means they will see how other people view this time of behavior.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

good to see you had some other good games though! a 2v2 battle would be the best thing in the world for me I love team games!

You are not free whose liberty is won by the rigour of other, more righteous souls. Your are merely protected. Your freedom is parasitic, you suck the honourable man dry and offer nothing in return. You who have enjoyed freedom, who have done nothing to earn it, your time has come. This time you will stand alone and fight for yourselves. Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood.

Yep, vorpalhit is right.

The dreaded TFG.

I have played afew. Those are the games that take a few years off, and go home a few grey hairs.

I ran into one in a torny myself. After turn 3 I quit. I rather have a check in the loss colum, than deal another turn with TFG. Everything I did or was going to try was an argument.

The problem I have with quitting in situations like this is that (and this is just me), I see the outcome of the game as having an effect on the overall outcome of the tournament. I didn’t really want to quit since it was my partner’s first tournament game ever. Additionally, if we quit and let him win – scoring all possible points, that that puts our opponent in competitive position against all other players in the tournament.

As bad as the game was, I felt we had to take it to the end. In 2 and a half hours of gaming we only got to finish round 3 because of his stalling. The big argument happened with about 2 minutes left. Fortunately my partners Dread was contesting the objective the Plaguebearers were holding and we pulled a win instead of a tie.

This thread is impossible because 40k is played for fun and GW has specifically said that having fun is the most important rule.

In all seriousness, the TO should have had more balls. He had two people who stated the model was within charge distance, and he had the admission of having bumped the model by TFG. That's not a 'dice off' situation.

As to the rest of your game, sorry to hear. Remember that this is an amateur's hobby, there is, for all intents and purposes, 0 regulation, and neither winning nor losing at its 'competitive events' has any impact, whatsoever, on your standing in society or life in general in any meaningful sense.

I got a story about one TFG. At my store, there is a man referred to as 'The Cyst' where he would constantly check things in his book, such as making sure marines are str 4, that etc wounding roll is a 2+ when it's str 7 to tough 3, every god damn time.

"What do you need to roll? A 4 or better to wound? Ok let me check the book to make sure." Dude would make all sorts of rule arguments, such as being able to cast Warptime on friendly units, using Nurgle's rot and Wind of Chaos in the same turn by claiming having a familiar allows him to and when he was getting thrashed heavily, he went and took a 45min bathroom break during a tournament and when he came back the round was about to end and said "Oh, there's not enough time left to finish. I guess it's a draw."

Yeah that blows. Guys like that make me loose faith in wargaming, and humanity in general.

Reminds me of the epic rules war I had with a guy that ended in both of us picking up large rocks (10lb mini boulders) off the table and smashing a few of each others models into pewter pancakes. We never did figure out who won that game and years later when I run into him we still make jokes about it.

I have a guy in my college club, we call him the joy reaper; he sucks the fun out of every game he knows how to play (all of them).

During my 40k match with him, 500 pts each side, he repeatedly said "It wasn't like that in 4th ed."

No , REALLY? I was under the impression that if they didn't change the rules, it wouldn't be a change of editions now would it?!

There was more during the match, but I CBA to name them. I only want to drink and forget it.
