i've saved up for a hell of a long time now, and i'm finally ready to get a vechile for chaos and the guy at my store said i could convert both, but which should i get? bearing in mind i'm chaos and ther's a big points difference, and i'll use them for normal 40k round about 1000pts.

The Stormraven, as it stands, is BA exclusive (unless you work something out with your opponent beforehand, but that wouldnt really be a "normal" game anymore) and the Baneblade/Hellhammer is too costly to field in anything smaller than 2000.

Well, for either of those things they're Apoc only. Of course you can field either in Apoc.
I'd get a Baneblade. They're great fun and a needed power-boost when you start playing apoc

For Apoc, Stormraven is probably the best. Much more point efficient than a Baneblade (it looks good on paper but you can easily field enough lascannons for the equivallent cost to blow it to hell and back in the first turn).

So unless you want to use that model for somethingout of a codex (which would be silly) you and friends will have to make up rules for a non standard version of 40k.

I would definitely figure out how you're going to use those models before you invest in either of them if, as if it's taken you a 'hell of a long time' to save up $60 USD I'm guessing you're young and your income is limited.
Chaos can use neither of those things in regular gameplay.
In regular gameplay, however, you will probably get a lot more use out of the Storm Raven than you will a superheavy tank.
If you play Chaos, you can run 'counts-as blood angels' with almost no pain, especially if you like World Eaters. Bunch of World Eaters in rhinos = counts-as assault marines, add Sang Priest for FNP, and let your shining SR fly inTerminators or Death Company.
That can be done in any points level, in any game, and is perfectly legal.
Baneblades can only be run in Apocalypse, or if your opponent agrees to something with you beforehand. You'll likely never get to play it in a tournament, and 1,000 pt pickup games featuring superheavies are real, real rare.
The Baneblade also costs a good bit more than the Stormraven, so not only will you get less use out of it overall, you will have to pay more to do so.

If you're opponent agrees then go for it.
The baneblade varians are pretty much only for apocalypse and unsuitable for normal games...

I just want to clarify something for you:
Everything in this game is usable with opponent's permission. That includes stuff that isn't even in the codices for 40k, and comes from an outside supplement like Forgeworld Imperial Armor or White Dwarf or even stuff that you make up your own rules for.
Putting spikes and signs on a Blood Angels Storm Raven will not make it a Chaos model, any more than sticking an Iron Halo onto Abaddon would make him Marneus Calgar.
You are completely reliant upon your opponent agreeing to let you field the Storm Raven in your chaos army. Just as much as if I asked you if Abaddon could lead my Space Marines army, or if my Eldar army could take Nurgle Bikers.
The GW guy is telling things you can do to make the storm raven look like it's a part of your chaos army, but he is not going to make it 'legal' by the normal rules to let you have a storm raven in all of your lists, especially in games against people that you might not know very well.

I would advice that you stick to units normally available in your regular codex. Plus you can actually use Baneblades and Hellhammers in normal games as the rules for them are in the various Imperial Armour books and the rules for the Baneblade/Hellhammer are the exact same as they are in the apocalypse book

Read your Codex very carefully. You can only use what's inside it for a normal pick up game. If you want to use the Storm Raven, you need to (in this order): Get the Blood Angels Codex and ask your opponent if you can use it in the battle. They will, almost certainly, say no and there's nothing you can say about it, as the unit is not in your codex.
The only way to field a Storm Raven in a Chaos army without your opponent's consent is in an Apoc battle, which is 3000 points at least. In such a case though, a Baneblade is much more practical.
Also note: Even if you could field a Baneblade in normal games, it will cost you half your army if you're playing 1000 points. This means that you'll only be able to afford the bare minimum of 2 troops and a HQ, and little else. A Baneblade looks good on paper, but 500 points can easily buy enough lascannons to blow the crap out of it.
As a display model though, the Baneblade is a better model. It's very iconic and a hugely impressive model.

The guy is just trying to persuade you to buy a big expensive kit you don't really need. Buy some of the stuff in your own book instead; you'll get a lot more use out of it.

Also, look into buying from somewhere like maelstrom games as you save a standard 10-15% on everything you buy, and more in their quite frequent sales.
And I agree, the GW guy is just trying to make you splash out on an expensive kit that most people probably won't let you field in a chaos army.

There's another thread with a similar argument on the Stormraven. Me thinks GW is either hinting to us that the Raven will be available during the Summer of Flyers for all SM chapters, or they realised they dropped the ball on this one and made a costly model (in canada, it's more expensive than a land raider) that (theoretically) only a fraction of the SM players will ever buy, and are trying to push excess stock.

Alot of places are house ruling that a stormraven can be used by any marine based dex and will most likely get a offical update. As to a baneblade where the hell would it fit on the FOC? I plan to get one for apocalypse and spearhead. IMHO it would overkill in 1000 point games but hey if your group lets you thats their call. I would get a stormraven or more stuff to pad my existing codex forces first thu.
