Do you have to buy and use it in place of a model you already have? Seen several threads where people are concerned that if they buy new models that they will be updated soon. Why is this? Are you obligated to use the newest model? Do people just want the newer models because they look better?

Newer models are often better than older ones. You are not obliged to buy newer models to replace old ones and can still play with the older models (I'm currently selling some 2nd edition Space Orks, as well as some Gorkamorka Orks that I would be prefectly OK to use in my Ork army).

What people tend to do if they are looking to buy a new army is ask if they are going to be updated soon, as often when armies are updated they will get new models and if the codex is getting updated as well, some of the units will become better or worse, affecting what you would want in your army.

Thus it would make sense to wait until the new models or codex are released before buying the army.

While newer models might often be technically better, often they have LESS character than the older ones (if they ever do a new model of the evil necromancing clown, that won't hurt though).

I've only bought the newer models where there is no older model available and continued to use the old models where I can. Nothing is EVER thrown away in 40k, Marines still use their stuff because they are 'holy relics'.
They don't just upgrade because it's a new financial year and the tax breaks make it feasible.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Yeah I understand that codex updates are huge deals. Thanks for the enlightenment. Are model and codex updates usually set to come out together?

Usually yes, but if not all the models are ready or get released with the codex they'll come out with out it as a separate wave.

It's not only that newer models look better (in most cases, not all), but that sometimes units get completely dropped when a codex is updated. For example, when the beastmen army book was updated, chaos ogres and chaos trolls (and I think some other units, too) were dropped from the list. They are now in the chaos warriors list, but that won't help the guy who just bought a pack to go with his new beastmen army.

It happens rarely, though. The only other instance I remember is the Leman Russ Exterminator being dropped from the Space Wolves list.

"We train young men to drop fire on people, but their commanders won't allow them to write "feth" on their airplanes because it's obscene!" (Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now)

And you know what's funny? "feth" is actually censored on a forum about a dystopia where the nice guys are the ones who kill only millions of innocents, not billions.

Eye of Terra.

The transition from metal to plastic is what has caused me to replace a lot of models. Some are still worth keeping, but the new sculpts are pretty darn good.

I guess it would depend on the model.

Some old stuff is quite terrible and in dire need of replacment the Bloodthirster for example.

Then there's stuff which is fine, like the Eldar grav tank. That's still looking cool all these years later (how old is that thing anyway got to be over 15 years at least)

I can't really think of much that isn't better for being re-realeaed but i know there are things, just cant think what right now. I know there's been some stuff that has been redone badly, then re-redone to make it good (hive tyrant)

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

Are people talking about Grey Knights?

If so, it's because the new Codex is coming out soon, with a whole ton of new units. And, there's a possibility quite a few of the old units are being cut.

As an added bonus, most of the Grey Knight line is currently incredibly expensive resin models, while the new ones are going to be plastic and (presumably) much cheaper per model.

I like new models, but im in no hurry to run out and buy a 15-50$ model based on the fact that it looks cool. I apply critical thought to all of my purchases with GW. I like to think about what I will do with it, how will I paint it, what kind of special detail will I give it, how will it fit into my army, is it a reasonable buy and a useful piece, etc.

I do like new models based on their look and because they generally are replacing an inferior product. For example, prior to the release of the new DE I had absolutely NO interest in collecting an army....now its all I can think about, I even put my Eldar army (that I purchased months before Eldar was even released) on the back burner for now.
