So what do you guys/gals think that 40k has to teach us, a modern society? What can we learn from the Imperium of Man, the Eldar, Tau, and the other powers of the Milky Way?

Personally, I gleaned this: Blind Faith is bad, question everything.

Seriously though.
Super soldiers are always a bad idea no matter how strong you are as they seem to have a 50% defect rate.

No the best lesson to learn from 40k, although not sure any lessons from 40k can be good lessons...

Teen angst shouldn't dictate storyline?

Or...

The 'rule of cool' can be taken ridiculously far?

I seriously hope the 40k universe can't teach us anything... just as I would seriously hope we didn't need the StarTrek Universe to teach us morality and racial harmony.

40K has made me a lot more culturally tolerant, and especially more tolerant of people who arent as culturally tolerant.
Thats not to say i was a racist bigot before or that I now agree with racism.
Just a matter of understanding.

Oddly, I think I've learned that you can't always judge people's sense of happiness without knowing their culture. The IoM is a place where horrible things are done in the name of the Emperor, often to his own subjects, and they're still glad to serve him because it beats the alternative.

We learn our entire moral and cultural code through narratives of some kind. These can literally be stories or dozens of other things.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

What did W40K teach me?

Suffer not the xenos to live.

"How many more worlds do we sacrifice? How many more millions or billions do we betray before we turn and fight?" - attributed to Captain Leoten Semper of Battlefleet Gothic - Gothic War, the evacuation of Belatis.

If commanding a Titan is a measure of true power, then commanding a warship is like having one foot on the Golden Throne - Navy saying.

The big moral is that things are only going to get worse. Also, that the road to hell may be paved with good intentions, but it is surely grouted with the blood the innocent.

Im an arab who was born and raised in England thats not what i had meant, Its made me see individuals as just individuals and not as representations of there kind as a whole.
How i derived this from 40k as a whole is the whole craftworld Eldar thing, some craftworlds are tools against human but some are alright if i was in the 40k universe Id be apprehensive at making contact with them but I wouldn't orbital strike them into oblivion without even confirming there intentions.

United States of WAAAGH!

Warhammer 40k has taught me to hate everything that is different or doesn't have the same beliefs. If they don't worship the emperor, they will kill you (see: Chaos)! If they look different, they will kill you (Tau, Eldar, Orks, etc)! If they are an insect, they will kill you (tyranids)!

Oh, we can't forget, if they believe the same things and look the same way, there is a 50% chance that they will come back and kill you in one way or another.

Now, if you excuse me, I'm off to go be a recluse.

I feel that for me, and those that I play with, its given us all a greater confidence in ourselves. Not so much in our physical selves, as I'm already tall enough to not have to worry about that, but more in the sense of what I'm able to do if I set my mind to it. The painting and gaming is fun and relaxing and all, but to have people stop and say how good your conversion/painting work is, or how well you used (insert unit name here), its a nice feeling.

Or, to make light of everything I just said, when it doubt blow it up.
