Hey, I remember somebody mentioning that they converted Hydras from Chimera Chassis + Tamiya 1/35 Flakvierling kits. Any pictures of how this turns out?

trouble is, the guns aren't the right cal., not by a long shot, so they need to be beefed up, or replaced.

That flakvierling 38 is too small a calibre.
Looks more like the FW Sabre platform with quadmount heavy stubbers (and no gunshield).
88's might be a better option.

A lot of people use the quad mount from the Aegis defence line.

These are OK, but you're paying $17.50-22.50 for a model that still looks too small, versus $7 ea. for these things.
Someone posted that they've used these before. I'm just curious how it looks.

Replace the guns with 4" of 1/4" metal rods, capped off by small wire nuts. That'll give you the caliber you're looking for.

This whole thing is a perfect example of how far out of scale GW stuff is.
If you want to avoid getting a bunch of BS from over zealous fan boys just buy the correct GW model. If you dont care, then do what you want to do.

I decided to go down the surface to air missile route as a 'counts as' hydra, this is not my pic but I currently have something similar to this cobbled together:
I like the idea of SAMs more than autocannons anyway, and the launcher part will eventually end up more like this when I get around to working on it.

Unfortunately the only GW-ish model is sold by Forge World, and is a complete ripoff. $100 for a little plastic model produced with POS quality control? No thanks.

I'd imagine all it'd look like would be a chimera, without the crew compartment so as that area is flat (use plasticard), with that gun stuck on. It doesn't seem like too difficult a job, and could fit in with the 40k style rather well if your looking for an alternative to the more techy hydra produced by forgeworld (plus some writers actually seem to discribe weapons more like your one in their novels when discribing hydras). Don't let the calibre be an irk either...I use the GW profiles as more of uh...guidelines anyhow-its four cannons of roughly the same size of an infantry sized autocannon anyhow. I'm using one based off of the Vickers A4E6 series anyhow, but yeah, maybe go for something like a trojan with its rear cut down so as the top is just above the track level, but with the raised area that houses the crew compartment intact, but it all depends on how much work your willing to put in really. =P

You CAN get alternatives from OTHER makers.
Old Crow make some good replacements in resin, with VERY good QC.
They're what I use for hydras and manticores.

I think it looks cool, but as others have pointed out, it's a little weedy. I'd think the base and plating would be spot on, but perhaps with the GW autocannons, or even plasticard tubing to look like them.

You CAN also get plasticard tubing that nests inside each other.
That's how I generally make cannon barrels.
3mm for the main barrel.
5mm for the sleeve and muzzle.

I checked these out actually but couldn't find a proper kitbash. What do you suggest?
These are $32 with shipping but that's a little steep. They look very meh...
