Okay, so in 40k fluff, we have ourselves the badass Wolf King of the then Space Wolves Legion, Leman Russ. Arguably one of the most awesome Primarchs ever produced by the Emperor, and a first favourite amongst fans (including me!).
Then you also have the Leman Russ Battle Tank, used by the Imperial Guard.

As amusing as it is to think that Leman Russ was so awesome, he had a line of battle tanks named after him, I wonder what is the fluff associated with this? What did Russ do in the Great Crusade to warrant the Imperial Army (or maybe, the later Imperial Guard) to want to name their tanks after Russ (especially him out of all the other primarchs)?

I've not read any fluff that directly links the two (maybe it's an RT era thing?), but if there is I'd like to know, since the question came up amongst my gaming group.

Cheers.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

AFAIK, in the older fluff, Leman Russ created the design of this tank some time during the HH. Maybe even during the siege of Terra. But I read in some more recent fluff that The LRBT was simply named after the primarch because of his heroic actions, and not that Leman Russ created the design for the tank himself.

So I'm a bit confused too.

"How many more worlds do we sacrifice? How many more millions or billions do we betray before we turn and fight?" - attributed to Captain Leoten Semper of Battlefleet Gothic - Gothic War, the evacuation of Belatis.

If commanding a Titan is a measure of true power, then commanding a warship is like having one foot on the Golden Throne - Navy saying.

I read that the tank was named after him because it 'epitomised the balance in attack and defence' or something like that.

I believe the latest "canon" (dont quote me on it though) regarding it is that when the Dark Angels and Space Wolves were heading for Terra to aid against the siege, Leman Russ and the Lion had arguments whether to just ignore all else and head for Terra as fast as they could (which the Lion wanted) or if they should stop along their route to help worlds in need (Which Russ wanted).

They stopped for some worlds atleast (I dont know the whole story) and one of them was a forgeworld where they later started the production of the tank stc, which they named after their liberator.
