Subject: Mech Guard - A Recruit's approach to army building
|

Been Around the Block
|
Hi all,
Going to be playtesting this list in the next few weeks, represent's my first foray into IG. Would like General Feedback, as well as specific advice on how to bring it up to 1000 (for neatness) and then 1500 points.
I originally designed this list around 3 Vendettas instead of chimeras, which would take care of the dearth of anti-armour, which is my main concern, but didnt have the GC, so flying lascannon death will have to wait!
cheers,
cK

Looks solid so far, with a tough (for guard) centre of troops and commander, with the future vendettas fillout anti-armour, but how do your chimeras have autocannons?

Thats a good question. Codex upgrades are only heavy flamer or heavy bolters. Other than that, its a decent list. Theres a few things that I think should be switched.
Since your playing guard, power weapons and plasma pistols on vet squads really aren't worth it. The squad want to avoid CC if possible, so what the point in kitting them out with CC stuff? By that same token, carapace armor is a pointsink. Since all your men are in chimeras, they really don't need the carapace. Personally I prefer a ratio of 50% plasma to 50% melta, it means that you can deal with both armor and heavy infantry, even without any big tanks. I also think the premier loadout for a chimera is Multi laser/heavy flamer, as it means you can deal with hordes and normal infantry rather well.
Heres a 1000pt list I would run
CCS - 4xPlasma Guns, Chimera w. ML/HF
(165)
Troops
Vet Squad - 3xPlasma, Chimera w. ML/HF
(170)
Vet Squad - 3xMelta, Chimera w. ML/HF
(155)
Vet Squad - 3xMelta, Chimera w. ML/HF
(155)
Fast Attack
Vendetta Gunship
(130)
Heavy Support
Hydra Flak Tank
(75)
Hydra Flak Tank
(75)
Hydra Flak Tank
(75)
Total 1000pts
To take it up to 1500 pts, add another vet squad, another vendetta, and maybe switch out the hydras for a couple plain leman russes

or he could put the hydra's into a squadron to create a light infantry shredder, then have the Leman Russ tanks operate as lone wolves going after bigger game.
But i agree with most of what you suggested, more bodies in an IG is usually a good thing. what about having a vet squad to hang back with a heavy weapon as an objective holder? if they must be mounted in a chimeria, perhaps a heavy bolter in the hull would compliment it's passangers?

If you need to have an objective holder, just deploy 1 vet squad out of its chimera and hide it near the objective. At the end, they can run out of cover to control/contest the objective. It also means you can have a chimera to use as infantry support, and if one squad loses theirs, theres another one right there to re-embark in
