Well I'm about to go thousand sons but I'm debating whether or not to go purist or switch it up (not throwing in other factions, just tzeentch), basically I wanna know the do's and don'ts of purist,I have the basic idea of 3x tsons with 3x rhinos, basically wanna know the dos and donts of a purist tsons army, like for example i think its no havocs or something like that? Also if you can use daemons of any sort, really wanna use a daemon prince tson guy, (basically for the model conversion, excited to try and convert, i know i could just do it and no problems but I'm really feelin the purist look) Tank possibilities, and such. Don't really want a standard list of the typical tsons army ( i like to make my own army lists) but like i said the dont would help bunches. Any help would be appreciated. Thank ya's!

Before you start spending money, you may want to play some game with proxy models.

In terms of purity, Thousand Sons Dreadnoughts look good, especially the Forgeworld one. Likewise leave the Rhinos at home and take Land Raiders. With Daemonic Possession they're pretty tough, and their Lascannons make up for the lack of anti-vehicle in your squads. Two Land Raiders carrying two squads of Thousand Sons is good and leaves a Heavy Support option open for another tank, like a Predator or Vindicator. You're better off going for a Sorcerer as your HQ: Daemon Princes are just big targets, plus they can get up to three psychic powers in addition to their force weapon. A Sorcerer with Wings can ride in transports while staying safe in Iv4+ squads

Finally, don't be afraid to puff out your force with some Daemons, as they can add some close combat oomph, and are good for holding objectives.

Tsons are pretty bad but you can win with them.

I suggest you don't take a purist army because you'll have like 15 guys at 1000 pts if you do, which is crap, because only 45 bolter wounds have to be inflicted, which is bad.

If you want purist Take 2 spartan princes( wings at base) always, take two squads of TS in rhinos and oblits, that'll generally kill a lot of marines

idk i personally would scrap the idea

SCOUTS FTW you dont dis them

Guess it comes down to the "fun" factor. I like having fun in games, and don't really get caught up in the "top tier" army ideas just to win, sure winning is fun, but with something you didnt come up with (army list) doesnt seem like its something to boast about. And winning or losing is how you play that army, ive seen weak armies win with good tactica. Thats just me, i like custom, not to sound hypocritical but purist would seem like not so custom, guess switching it up would be better. Course losing all the time would really put "fun" to the test, heh. But the way i play is i like to paint, convert especially, and the lore somewhat. And tsons seems awesome for this matter. Course i dont wanna put something together and make it look good, while having it lose majority of the games, unless its good enough to re-sell, but i try not to think of it that way.

Anyways the 2 land raiders idea sounds interested, tho not $wise lol, i recently invested in a decent sized chaos army online so ill have 1 LR coming my way.
And in terms of daemons, which ones would be best for holding objectives, i don't know off the top of my head if theres more than one tzeentch lesser daemon choice, the flamers and maybe the manta ray guys (i know im bad ) its been like 6 years since i played chaos.

Don't listen to the haterz. A thousand sons themed army can be just fine. Just take a core of Thousand Son squads in rhinos, (the core of any CSM army really, marines in rhinos) and then take 2x DP's, Dreadnought or two, and whatever other stuff you like, and you'll have alot of fun.

Thousand Sons are relentless so can fire the crap out of their bolters and still move, and the 4+ inv comes in awful handy. Just don't treat them like they are invincible, they are just marines with 4++. The aspiring sorcerer with warptime synergizes really well with their force weapon, or spamming a few "Gift of Chaos" and targetting powerfists and such can ensure your T-sons hold their own in CC as well.

Thanks, i just know of some of their weaknesses, like gettin rid of tanks, in which case havocs or oblits would be ideal, but i just like that idea of purist, wanna try and hug the borderline as much as possible without breaking or too much outside the limits. I dunno i guess i want that appreciation of going all out on one good idea and pulling thru.

But in terms of donts for a purist, ive heard things like no fast atk or elites or something? Is that normally the case? Sorcerer was gonna be my main option, after the daemon prince idea of course, and gift of chaos was my main thing too, exactly for gettin rid of pesky badasses in combat, and warptime is great for when you probably wont be able to avoid combat and those re-rolls can come in handy.

As for dreads, would it be wise to go CC and drop pod it? i figured going all shooty would be good for balancing the tank weakness.

If you want to trash tanks, then take a Predator with an Autocannon and two Lascannon sponsons.

Chaos Space Marines don't have Drop Pods, so you can't Deep Strike them in.

I recommend finding a copy of the Codex to peruse before writing an army list you might want to collect. That's before proxy battles to find out if you really want to play that way.

Also, if you're budget-conscious, I recommend looking on ebay, particularly at an Australian seller called "Dune_sea" but there's a bunch of reliable sellers out there who might have a cheap Land Raider. Push comes to shove somewhere like the Warstore or Maelstrom Games might give you the discount for a Land Raider.

Thanks, yeah i use ebay quite a bit, more often than not i get my things there if not craigslist if possible and sometimes stores if im desperate. I had to look up the codex cuz i didnt think chaos had drop pods, and the reason i say stuff about tanks is that my friend has an all vehicle IG army so it's there, just wanna have an answer to most anything i might come across. Tho its hard to really do that for some armies, just gotta trust in your stuff!! but yeah i need to get my hands on a codex rather than lookin up answers all the time, i might have one already (?lol) thru that army i just bought, it said rule book, so hoping its the chaos (newest one for that matter).

How's about a defiler? i know in terms of heavy support you wanna be conscious of everything, as well as your whole army for that matter, but i know i want at least 1 land raider, ill be gettin a defiler anyways but if i dont need it i might as well trade it off. And perhaps a vindicator in the end run since str 10 ordnance sounds oh so good

in terms of what i have (actually whats in the mail coming to me) i have 3x 9man tsons squads coming, land raider, defiler, 1 rhino, and some misc stuff. searched high and low for some good deals here and there, but thats like the total thats coming for me. Not that im rich or anything, but i managed to sell off some old 40k things to keep it tight. I know i might have taken a deep plunge but when i set my sights on something i go all for it lol, we'll see if it pays off! if anything hey i can always do khorne again.

do Tsons really need the rhinos? You can move and shoot 24" You can also take large squads to get around having to pay for too many 60 point champions

also as a legion, shouldnt they be called "the twenty thousand sons" instead

They're called the Thousand Sons because their legion got dropped to that number during some war or battle I believe.
