There are points on the model to make the game balance and the number of points depends on what you and your opponent agree.

Basically what everyone said above this post. If you want to know more I would suggest picking up a 40k rulebook and a subsequent codex. Welcome to the Dak!

Yeah definitely get a rulebook or an experienced 40k player to explain the whole game in depth.

Welcome to Dakka

The points are to balance your forces with your opponent, as said above.
Some units are more expensive than others depending on how good they play on the tabletop. E.G.

A Apace Marine Tactical Squad (10 SMs): 160pt
Ork Boy Mob (Ten Ork Boyz): 60pt

This Tells us two things:

1.That Space marines perform better then orks (SM:16pt Boy: 6)
2.In order for the ork mob to have a better chance of defeating the SM squad, they would have to group up in numbers, to maybe a mob of 20 Ork Boyz.

Because the Ork mob is now a 120 pt unit, and the SM unit is 90, the orks now have a better chance of defeating the space marines.

I hope this helps you, if you have any questions then just P.M. me, I would be more than happy to answer.

um - the space marines should be 160? not 90, if they are a 10 man squad of 16 pt models..

Other than that, everything tracks

even point games are the way to go. Otherwise it's unfair to the army with the lower points, who will likely get beaten.

The bigger the army, the more points you spend. There's nothing wrong with a high-point army, but i'd suggest starting at about 750 pts, and working up..

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts
