Aliens exist, and we have proof.

That astonishingly awesome claim comes from Dr. Richard B. Hoover, an astrobiologist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, who says he has found conclusive evidence of alien life — fossils of bacteria found in an extremely rare class of meteorite called CI1 carbonaceous chondrites. (There are only nine such meteorites on planet Earth.) Hoover’s findings were published late Friday night in the Journal of Cosmology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

“I interpret it as indicating that life is more broadly distributed than restricted strictly to the planet earth,” Hoover, who has spent more than 10 years studying meteorites around the world, told FoxNews.com in an interview. “This field of study has just barely been touched — because quite frankly, a great many scientist would say that this is impossible.”

Hoover discovered the fossils by breaking apart the CI1 meteorite, and analyzing the exposed rock with a scanning-electron microscope and a field emission electron-scanning microscope, which allowed him to detect any fossil remains. What he found were fossils of micro-organisms (pictured below), many of which he says are strikingly similar to those found on our own planet (pictured above).

alien-life-figure-4a“The exciting thing is that they are in many cases recognizable and can be associated very closely with the generic species here on earth,” said Hoover. Some of the fossils, however, are quite odd. “There are some that are just very strange and don’t look like anything that I’ve been able to identify, and I’ve shown them to many other experts that have also come up stump.”

In order to satisfy the inevitable hoard of buzz-killing skeptics, Hoover’s study and evidence were made available to his peers in the scientific community in advance of the study’s publications, giving them a chance to thoroughly dissect his findings. Comments from those who decided to sift through the evidence will be published online, alongside the study.

“Given the controversial nature of his discovery, we have invited 100 experts and have issued a general invitation to over 5,000 scientists from the scientific community to review the paper and to offer their critical analysis,” writes Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics scientist Dr. Rudy Schild, who serves as the Journal of Cosmology’s editor-in-chief. “No other paper in the history of science has undergone such a thorough vetting, and never before in the history of science has the scientific community been given the opportunity to critically analyze an important research paper before it is published.”

Needless to say, if Hoover’s conclusions are found to be accurate, the implications for human life will be staggering. Here’s hoping that he’s right.

Update: While the Journal of Cosmology says that “no other paper in the history of science has undergone such a thorough vetting,” some highly respected names in the scientific community are challenging the validity of Cosmology, and the findings of Dr. Hoover.

“[The Journal of Cosmology] isn’t a real science journal at all,” says PZ Meyers in Science Blogs, “but is the ginned-up website of a small group of crank academics obsessed with the idea of Hoyle and Wickramasinghe that life originated in outer space and simply rained down on Earth.”

So there you have it — this is either reality-altering news, or the work of kooks. Our hearts believe, but our brains are kind of bummed.

I told my GF about this.....

"Well duh! HELLOOOO!! We've seen the spaceships!"

Ah, science. Saying what common sense should have said long ago but we were too arrogant to really believe it. \

Jokes aside, this also adds credence to abiogenesis, so hopefully he'll send some fossils to be studied by an expert in that field.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

PZ Myers comes across very strongly in this response but makes some very valid observations. I have to agree that the credibility of the 'paper' is close to nil, despite being so thoroughly reviewed.

I'll remain very sceptical about the whole thing until I see some actual proof in data, rather than opinion.

which also means that if they did send it to a biologist they might be able to figure out if the damned thing is accurate or just due to mishandling the rocks (in a non-sterile environment it's easy to see bacteria landing no the rocks as they're being examined).

With you on that Soup
There was a similar expectation before which later was disproved iirc

If it does prove true, it is my firm belief that aliens dined on coconuts.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

Okay, so the male version of "Cougar" is now officially "Albatross".

He found what he believed to be fossilised remains. You can analyse the molecular composition (they found no nitrogen which, if true, would disprove conventional life) and the basic structure visually but it is very hard to prove exactly what you are looking when the subject matter is so small.

The sceptics would have a field day if the guy claimed to have found live extraterrestrial life without providing any genetics or hard evidence.

There has to be life out there, what I think is cool is that we seem to be making such awesome leaps in science, it seems possible that we will wind up being the smartest ones in this corner if the galaxy and the evil aliens that strip planets and wipe out primitive savages ala independence day, will be us!

Were gonna be the bad guys, and being British I welcome this excellent news.

40k is gonna come true, and my great grandson is joining the ultramarines!

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

This is what I have always believed. We are the invading aliens. We do it to each other and when we go out into the universe we will do it to others.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Whilst I think it is inevitable that life exists elsewhere in the universe (quite possibly in vast quantities), I don't think this particular claim [in the original story] will be substantiated.

I do await actual proof of alien life however (from microbial to HOLY COW THERE IS A SHIP FLOATING OVER THE CAPITAL CITY!!!111) with great anticipation.

Hmm... fossils found in a meteorite can't wait for conspiracy theories.

To be honest I am surprised we have no definite proof of alien life already, with all the planets out there, one of them is bound to harbour some form of life be it a microscopic bug or a 10ft blue monster with three eyes. Europa for example, an ice moon with water underneath= alien fishies

We really just have to wait for the peer review.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

well... this isn't the first time this has come up. there was a meteorite that showed up in the 90's they were investigating for fossils.

There is a good chance that we have encountered aliens before, mates. Its just they are very sneaky. Even more than ninjas. Black Ninjas.

I mean, there has been numerous reports of things by pilots of cargo planes, planes of all kinds. Not too mention all those other reports.

Yeah, some of them are bs, but I would wager not all.

The government wouldn't allow us to know, anyway. Can you imagine the side effects of that knowledge to the general population? It would be enormous.

Was it that long ago already?
http://www.marsnews.com/focus/life/

The claim that they are fossilised bacteria was later rejected, but it seems that in 2009 there was another claim for (previous) life on Mars.
