Like the title says. I'm ironing out a list for 2400pts, and trying to decide between the two.

Running Skaven, and I've got no Stormvermin, and currently the list includes no Plague Monks, though I have about 30 models worth. So my only magic standard at this point is the (obligatory) BSB. My meta contains an exceedingly small amount of shooting. There's a wide variety of different races on display, but they're all heavily combat oriented; no empire, no dwarves, a few lizardmen but skinks don't worry me nearly so much as the Slann.

I haven't run either before. I'll probably be able to get in a couple of games before the tournament, but that's not a given. Which do you prefer?

For reference, my (current and almost certainly no-where near finalised) list:
Spoiler:

Grey Seer (foul pendant, skalm)

BSB (magic standard, shield)

3x engie (death globe, doom rocket, brass orb)

3x 40 slaves, mus

2x 30 clanrats, standrd, mus ratling gun (this is an aesthetic choice, i love the idea of rats with machine guns)

3x 5 gutter runners (poison, slings)

2x 5 censor bearers

6 jezzails (or 2x 3, haven't decided)

2x WLC

Doom Wheel

Abom

This is from memory, reading it now it doesn't seem like 2400 but that's basically it.

Thinking about Plague Monks, as well, to get another source of magic banners. How many plague monks is enough for one unit? Or, going the other way, how many is too few?

Personally I always have the Stormbanner. In your particular case you may just want to spend the points on magic armor for the BSB.

Regular Clanrats with Flaming of AP attacks are only slightly less mediocre.

If you take the monks I would give them the flaming banner as you may run into the tower scenario.

Oh, absolutely. The thing is that there's a lot of regenstars going around locally, and a few Aboms. If I stick the EF banner in the group of clanrats, it's becomes an instant target, taking attention away from my real threats. And hey, it might even do some damage.

I'd stick a musket on the BSB, and take the flaming banner.
If you're worried about Aboms/hydras, have the BSB deploy with the jezzails. Gives you flaming shooting.
All you need is 1 wound, then you drop the regen, and finish them off with the warp lightning.

I think you've got a better chance with jezzails than in combat with clan rats. And, once the job is done, the BSB can always leave to join another unit.

Banner of eternal flame is pretty much where it's at. I don't think the razor standard even comes close.

Agreed. More than four times the price for what's usually less useful. I do think that the Razor would benefit clanrats more than the Flame, though.

Honestly, though, I'd just give the BSB some sweet magical protection. The re-rolling Ld tests for that borrowed time is way better than a little extra oomph for a turn or two.
