Subject: Idea for Ig unit!

Hey guys, i had a great idea today, the imperial guard lack any cheap(Points/cash wise) units save penal legion troopers(depending on what you roll for them) so i had an idea for a sweet unit. A squad of Commissars in combat training, getting their first taste of real war(haven't really worked out a name)
Commissariat Training Squad(again, no idea what to name it)
Cost: 100 points
Composition: 9 Commissars in Training, 1 Commissar
War gear: CIT's are given flak armor, CC weapon, laspistol
Commissar is given flak armor, power weapon, bolt pistol
CIT's: WS/BS/S/T/W/I/A/LD/S
4 3 3 3 1 4 2 8 5+
Commissar: See Codex
OPTIONS:
-Up to two CIT's each may replace their laspistol with a plasma pistol at 15 points each
-Up to two CIT's each may replace their CC weapon for a power weapon at 10 points each
-The whole squad(Commissar included) may take Carapace armor at 75 points
-The Commissar may replace his/her power weapon with a power fist for 15 points
-The Commissar may replace his/her bolt pistol with a plasma pistol for 20 points
Special Rules: Stubborn, Eager Trainees
Eager Trainees: At the beginning of the players movement phase roll D6, determine the result from the table below:
1: The Commissars in training become filled with over confidence and arrogance, This turn, the Commissars in training head towards the nearest enemy and if they cant assault that turn, they must run towards the enemy.
2-5: The Commissars follow the directions of their teacher and act normally that turn.
6: Filled with faith in the emperor, determination, and possibly some "Motivation" from their teacher, the Commissars become fearless along with gaining furious charge for the rest of the turn, they are controlled normally.
What do you guys think? If the points costs for the squad options seem too high, i don't think they are, as for the special rules, i used the chaos dreadnought D6 table for this one.

Seriously? The Guard "lack any Cheap(points/cash wise) units"?
Veteran Squads. A single Cadian or Catachan box and voila--you've got a pretty good Troops choice right there.
From a fluff perspective:
This isn't how the Commissars are "trained". Commissars are given the same Schola Progenium training as Stormtroopers. In fact, many Commissars actually were Stormtroopers before their elevation to the Commissariat.
It's not a 'bad' idea--it's just unnecessary.

1) I find veterans ineffective in combat, at best they can kill a few enemies and muck them up for a couple turns, as well as kill some before hand too if they have some assault weapons.
2) Yes i know about the Schola Progenium, but from what Ive read(it was in a couple of the Ciaphas Cain novels i believe) he took a handful of Commissars in training, once onto a nid infested asteroid, and investigated/exterminated the nid's.
Like i said, vets don't do well with it in my experience, ogryns are too expensive, rough riders are equally expensive(not to mention grossly outdated), and a penal legion squad is random, not to mention the lack of transport choice.
Again, this is just me, and i would never be able to field it, but i just think it would be something neat.

Of course the Imperial Guard are "ineffective in combat". That's the intent of the army. They don't get up in your face, they blast you from a distance.
If you want something for close combat, add a Ministorum Priest to a Conscript/whatever unit you want. CC is where Guard are supposed to be weak.
And yeah. Cain's not something you should ever believe for background. It's written in an over-the-top fashion intended to mimic propaganda pieces.

:cough: powerblob :cough:
In any case, I do agree with Kan...the Imperial Guard have no cheap units? Ummm...isn't the Imperial Guard THE spammer of cheap infantry squads? If you want a close combat squad, get 30 Guardsmen, give them a priest and a commissar, dole out power weapons to all the sarges and the Commissar, and voila! An IG unit that will eat face in close combat, and grind its way through MEQs like they're nothing.
As I recall, how Commissars are trained seems to vary....in the Gaunt's Ghosts novels which are written in a much more realistic sense as opposed to the CIaphas Cain novels, Cadet Commissars are assigned to serve under a full Commissar, and that full Commissar then decides when they've earned the right to become a full Commissar. So, they still get combat experience...but they're getting it with the men they're actually going to serve with, instead of the Storm Troopers.

These kinds of training squads actually exist within the rules:

75 points for carapace armour!? just cut it to 30 like the vets get, or 20 like the command squad can get. i would go for thirty.
i would make it maybe 150 pts, with a Lord commissar and 9 trainees.

I like it. Back in RT though, the Commissar training squads all had Refractor fields.
So at the very least, make in an option. Good stuff otherwise. Also give them an option for a Chimera or a Rhino.
Actually, while we're at it, why not just do it like this:
Commissar Training Squad, 100 points
Commissar: As IG
Cadet: WS4 BS3 S3 T3 W1 I3 A1 LD7 SV5+
Unit Comp: 1 Commissar, 9 Cadets
Equipment:
Commissar has Flak Armor, Lasgun, Bolt Pistol, CCW
Cadets have Flak Armor, Lasgun, Laspistol, CCW
Entire squad may take Refractor Fields: +30 points
Entire squad may take Carapace Armor: +30 points
0-2 Cadets may replace their Lasgun with: Plasma Gun/Melta Gun+10, Flamer+5, Grenade Launcher+7
May take a Chimera: +55 points
(insert all other options from OP here)
