Really thats kind of weird. Usually they allow you to hold spots. Well try to arrive atleast 30 mins early to get a spot, if its going to be like that haha.

They might have done it for you, I've tried several times to get signed up before hand and I've always been told its a first come thing. I haven't ever had trouble getting in one though, so I don't think its a big deal, they've always had room. I think only one of the ones I've played in filled up.

You've been gone for a while lol. A lot more people have been coming in the past couple of months. I suspect this weekend will be pretty full as well.

Hey, I tried to call ahead earlier this week, and was told "no need, plenty of space."

It'd be a long drive to be told "we're full."

Even more so that they need to start let folks sign up. Last time I was there in November it wasn't full, how many folks have been coming out?

It's been maxing out every month for the past 3 or 4 months.

@Janthkin
It looks like I will be running this one, so I will save you a spot as you are driving so far.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Check that, I just talked to the owner.

He has had no shows in the past and doesn't like to save spots as he has turned people away only to have them not show up and lose the spot.

So, if you want to reserve a spot, call in that morning around 10am and reserve it that day.

You capping this at 8 players due to only 3 rounds Reece?

While I can sympathize with dealing with no shows, not accepting signups from people driving a long distance is a big deterrent.

Assuming a 11:00 start, if it takes more than 1 hr to drive there then calling at 10:00 to secure your spot is not very comforting.

This may be academic at this point, but if you are usually filling up it could start to matter.

When I drive from LA I will definitely want a secured spot.

@Manimal
I agree, but what can you do? The owner of the shop calls the shots in his house. I will discuss this with him for future events.

@Kevin Nash
I am a fill in in this case and so I have to use the system handed off to me. If I had run it from the start it would have been 1500, 4 rounds. But, I am not and that is OK. We will be running 3 rounds, 1850 and I will use the paint score as tie breaker system.

Not ideal, but it is what it is. It'll be fun and I am looking forward to it! In the future if I am the TO, I will be sure to implement a different structure.

Understood. I was just curious if it was going to have enough rounds for a true swiss tourney but they are using different tiebreakers so that makes sense. It just might be tough if two people go 3-0 and never play each other. But if everyone understands the format and tiebreakers going in then no worries.

Hopefully you guys will run a 4 rounder up there at some point (or 3 rounds with only 8 people). We'd love to sanction it!

We have run a 4 round event and it was good fun. The store has been a bit wishy washy on who is going to run the tournaments so we had to just kind of jump in and do it.

From here on out we will run more standardized events.

I understand the not showing up issue, its a valid negative to allowing for signups. If alternates were allowed to sign up as well and if people don't show up, the spots get filled it might work. At the end of the day it is the owner's call though I always like to be signed up.

It makes me nervous to not be signed up. As someone with limited time to game, I have to plan tournies at least a few weeks a head of time, I'd hate to miss one.

Yeah, I will talk to Gary about that. I think a good system would be to allow people to call in and hold a spot but if they aren't there at sign-in time, for their spot to be up for grabs for walk ins.

Sounds like a system that would make him happy and the folks that want to sign up. People could get booted if they don't show up 30 mins before start time and that would ensure a full house.

Meh. I've totally fit 24 people back there. Pat just didn't like setting up more tables.

I don't think Gary would appreciate a cap of 8, since the entire point from his perspective is getting more people in there. I doubt he cares if you have ties. So 4 rounds at 1500 sounds good. It's a more balanced tournament standard anyway, in my opinion.

4000 pts, 4000pts, 4000pts, 2000pts,

Yeah, bugs took first and second! I was the ringer and brought bugs, too.

We had:

3 bugs
3 BA
2 DA
2 CSM
2 Orks

So pretty good mix actually.

Next month will be 4 rounds, 1500 so that we can take 16 people and still have a clear winner.

Congrats to Janthkin for going 3-0 and winning!

Even with Cap and Control as the final mission, we only had two tie games the entire tournament, which was nice.

Thanks to everyone for coming out, it was a good time! Even with my pounding hang-over! Hahaha.

Awesome tournament, Reece was nice enough to give some late starters extra time to finish a full turn. (the nob biker army player was running late from lunch) I really regret not asking if rankings hq was going to be documented, the DOA list is just not as powerful as poeple claim, but I found a few interesting combos through the other BA players I want to try out next time.

No worries, I am glad you had fun. You had a good attitude despite drawing Bugs twice with DoA. That is such a crappy match-up.

Yeah I agree, I hear people winning with DoA but I just don't see how they beat Daemons or Bugs, or hell, even DE. I have obliterated DoA with my bugs every time I have played them, it hasn't even been close. But, if you mech up a bit, I think you will have more success as it is a cool looking army, too.

Thanks again for running it, Reecius. Nice store you've got up there; I'll be back (though not next month - between Adepticon & the WHFB 'Ard Boyz prelims, my gaming dance card is full for April).

I've started a battle report, for the first time in a while.
