Just a small rant...
I swear I get motivated to hobby at all the wrong, most inconvenient times. Right now for example. I have a strong urge to work on my latest terrain piece, but I can't because I'm at work... And I know by the time I get home all I'll want to do is crash on the couch and watch TV. I can't be alone on this... Anyone else? I dream of a day when I can hobby while at work. In the meantime; back to the grind.

Much rather be painting than working, although when I do get time to paint I do pretty much anything to delay the first meaningful brush stroke.

Gonna throw my brush into this brush-holder as well, all i think about in work is warhammer, and i work 6 days a week so by the time I get a day free i'm too knackered to do anything except play minecraft/fallout new vegas...
Put it this way, I've got 2 paintjobs to do for a friend, 1000pts of skaven, an ork painboy, a warboss conversion, a mordheim zombie pirate warband and a Dystopian war's battleship all waiting to be painted!

I hear you on this. My inappropriate urges to paint and make stuff tend to strike at 4 in the morning, or when I am at college or job interviews.
Then when I get home I have no desire to do anything at all.

At work I get great ideas. Upon arriving home they all don't matter....

Best kind of motivation: make painting and modelling your day job. So that even when you're at work, you're still painting/working on something. Best part of it is that you're forced to do it, otherwise no food for you.

I do stuff at work on my planning period. I should be writing lesson plans though.
As for motivation at the wrong times, every time I see a Fisher price plane, I want to convert it into a fighta bomma. So I will be walking down Wal-Mart and I see a cool toy that says for ages 36 months - 8 years and I instantly want it for my ork army.

Shouldn't you be finishing those terminators rather than procrastinating on the boards?
But yeah, every time I seem to get a flash of proper inspiration, it disappears by the time I can get round to picking up a paintbrush.

I actually paint more on the job than at home, but the above is definitely true - especially when I leave my painting kit at work.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

I find the best way to get into it when you get back home is to start making a list of all the things you want to do, convert, paint etc. The point is the list to be fun stuff you want to see finished to see what it would look like, not a chore-list of things that need to move off the table. (That list should exist too, appended beside the cool-stuff list, but in small font)
Eventually my list of concepts and ideas got so long I just started cracking when I got home. That list of ideas was enough to start getting me going, but to keep the motivation high, while im working on the new project, I work on as much and as many old things as I can so I dont suffer burnout from too many unifinished projects. Once I get started, no problem. Its the getting started that bothers.

I find I lose motivation at home as well, but if I think about it it's because of all the damn options for leisure I have: video games, netflix, posting on boards...ah, feth this, I'm going to go paint.

Actually, I'm procrastinating so I don't have to start the red cape on my Nurgle guy....who I'm painting so I don't have to do more Terminator yellowing.
