Subject: Best rules for my marines?

The Last Chancer Who Survived

So, I've been toying with the idea of redoing my marine army from scratch with all new models. I guess what I'm wondering most is what codex should I use? vanilla, blood angels or grey knights?
In my army's fluff, they've been lost in the warp for like 10k years. So, they are all wearing old armor, like MK2 - 6 armor and I'd be using all FW models because I guess I don't like having money. Also in the fluff, they're an army that just drops in from outta nowhere and kills all the baddies, then they leave, so I'm thinking all drop pods for men & dreads, maybe landspeeders or a storm raven... no tanks. Also in the fluff, they're anti-chaos so that's why I'm thinking of using GK rules, but I'm just wondering I guess if blood angels or vanilla would be better suited to the "hit & run" thing.
I just dunno how well the GK rules would go with the FW old marines, since they all have those stormbolters and stuff... it'd be a lot of converting. I think GW used to sell the metal GK arms separately but they're not there anymore.
Any ideas?

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

From the sound of your fluff...
neither.
Go with the Black Templars. We have (arguably) the best drop pods, HATE psykers, has existed since the second founding and has over 6k marines, so there's bound to be a lot of old armour in use. Our land speeders are the best, one dreadnought can get venerable and a veteran skill and, fluff-wise, one of the favoured methods of warfare is the orbital assault, i.e. dropping straight into the enemy, killing everything that moves and isn't painted black and then leaving. Sounds like it'd fit your requested fluff like a glove! You also get the added benefit of not having to listen to people complaining about powergaming.

Your chapter kinda sounds like the legion of the damned. especially the whole showing up out of nowhere and killing all the bad guys and then just dissappearing.

hmm.. yeah I never really read much about black templars, I was thinking more along the lines of legion of the damned, but a whole army like that, so that's why I was thinking of Blood Angels... also for the storm raven.
I don't expect to have a lot of dreadnoughts, I have 1 old metal one now, could add 1 more, but I plan for the army to be mostly men popping out of drop pods, terminators teleporting in. I'm thinking I'd go with all new models, and get the black reach box set, then mix in a lot of the new FW old armor marines.

Why not use the vanilla marine rules? You can use Legion of the Damned rules, and just go pod and jump pack heavy from there.

Yeah that would work too, I was just thinking maybe there were some other cool rule sets I could do instead. Don't really know much about the rules other than vanilla marines. I was thinking I'd wanna add a storm raven, and those are just for blood angels and grey knights right now right? Though I'm sure they'll want to sell a ton so they'll eventually make them available for all marines.

I've recently had the same problem as I bought a ton of the new Forge World armor variants to make my marines look the way they are depicted in much fluff and artwork.
The first question you need to ask is are these marines for tournament play? Then the answer is simple. Take the list or codex that best promotes your style of play and optimizes the elements. In this case, I really think the BA are the way to go.
If you plan on primarily playing casual games, let fluff dominate, I did and my vanilla marines are great fun to play... even at the tournament level.

yeah I won't be doing any tournaments with them at all.. if anything it'd be an apocalypse game in a store, but that's about it. But I do like building toward decent enough list that's good for most enemies in case I end up playing against a stranger, but since I've been averaging about 2 games a year these days, that doesn't even matter so much anymore.
Right now I have about 30 marines total (mostly old 2nd edition 1-pose guys) ... I'm thinking I'd order 1 set of each armor variant from FW, and then mix everything together. Or just get a black reach box set and mix those models in instead, for some cheap terminators and a 2nd dread too.
I'd be nice if FW would do some old fashioned terminators too, like the way early rogue trader models that looked totally different... only make them look good.
