In August Mongoose Publishing will release Designers & Dragons, a history of the role-playing game industry. Written by RPG.net’s Shannon Appelcline, Designers & Dragons recounts the history of almost 60 companies that have published role-playing games. Its company-by-company structure allows readers to follow the history of the publisher of their favorite RPG.
Appelcline proceeds to follow the fortunes of the various RPG publishers and the key game designers. Role-playing games grew out of the wargaming industry, which itself was only born in the 1950s. The publication of Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 kickstarted the RPG industry, which subsequently been through several boom and bust cycles.
Although precise details about the size and price of Designers & Dragons are yet available, it will be a large hardcover volume. Look for details to become available in the coming months.

Have to say that when I saw the title of this thread I thought it was some semi-smart spambot posting threads Whilst I am sure it will be... erm... interesting... I don't really think it will hold too much appeal to the majority of gamers. Though I suppose it could be used as a reference book.

The title made me think of a "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" kind of show except for DnD... I've read tons about RP history and I'd be surprised to see something I can't see for free on the internet already.

A woman writing about gaming just seems wrong. Perhaps she is the Jane Goodall of the RPG world; a pilgrim in an unholy land.

I was leant/read this aaggees back, IIRC the authoress ( ? ..is that right ?) has another, related or similar tome out this year.
It was a bit light and fluffy perhaps, but an easy enough read.

What's her story? It almost seems as if Hasbro hired a female marketing consultant to pretend to like D&D.

They gave that book away a few years at GenCon in the swag bag. Somehow I ended up with 3 copies of it and still don't know how.

Because you're a wargamer so the hoarding instinct runs deep in you.

She's done..does ? .. loads of articles for D & D.
Look... she even mentions the "Community" episode of D & D, what sort of loser would reference or draw attention to that then eh Mr. Ahtman ?
meanwhile...
My good friend Rachael went looking for Confessions of a Part-Time Sorceress at a Barnes & Noble in Seattle. The in-store computer showed they had two copies in stock but she couldn’t find either copy where the map said they would be. So she asked a sales person.
“Oh yeah,” the girl said. “That’s kept behind the desk.”
“Behind the desk?” Rachael asked. “That’s weird.”
I could see putting them there to keep my parents from fawning and drooling over them, but Judy and Tom are in Upstate New York.
The sales person went on to explain that Confessions of a Part-Time Sorceress is one of the store’s Top 20 MOST STOLEN BOOKS.
... ahh roleplayers ; PLAY as that rogue.

Oh man, and here I was thinking cos I go to the gym i'm not an uber geek... I'd prob buy that.
I got a book for Xmas a wile ago from my missus called Dungeons and Desk tops, charting the history of role play games.
Three things concern me about this. One, I felt the need to specify it was my missus that bought it, two I loved the book and three, what exactly does that mean she thinks of me! lol

I'd probably buy it if I stumbled across it in the shops, but I doubt I'd bother ordering it online.
