I've been looking at the Codex and I can't see much point at taking a Blood Angel's captain

They do get the most weapon options and are cheaper and with a higher WS than a reclusiarch but they don't buff anything, can't even get some of the fancy C:SM options like digital weapons, relic blades or artificer armour and just seem generally bad. They don't even get some of the BA's unique options like glaive encarmines.

Are they as bad as they appear or is there some hidden use for them?

There is pretty much no use for them.
You'd be better off picking a different hq

Customers ask me what army I play in 40k. Wrong Question. The only army I've never played is orks.

The Connoisseur of Crap.
Knowing is half the battle. But it is only half. Execution...application...performance...now that is the other half.

BA Captains make great:

1. Objective Markers
2. Bits for converting a Libby, Chaplain, S. Priest
3. Airgun Targets
4. Paint scheme test minis.
5. Old Primer (IS IT STILL GOOD?!) guinea pigs.
6. Model rocket astronauts.
7. Puppy teething toy.
8. Stand in for my 5 year old's missing lego men
9. Fish tank decoration.
10. Hang him from a string and use him to amuse the cat.

Other than that...

Correct. Despite countless millennia of evolution, technological advances and civilization, we're still monkeys throwing feces at things we don't like.-Zed.

It's not like anyone ever used BA captains in the past. No big deal here at all.

Erm... use them to deploy a company-level formation in Apoc?

Even then, Tycho will probably be a better option...

To be fair, a higher WS model with a TH or CF might be handy. But unlikely to payoff more than the buffs found elsewhere.
