When I first started my Ultramarines army I based them simply with green flock (pva glue) but I now want to remove it and start over with more of a sandy/gravely type look. Any tips on how to remove it and also what type of base do you think would be more appropriate?

To remove them, and keep the bases in fairly good shape, get your clippers, and place them just on the join, and squeeze firmly, it should pop off., just clean up the a little, and ready to go!

Did you use superglue or plastic glue?
I have been planning to do this for my whole which was superglued to bases. The consensus I got was to freeze them and then pop them off. Alternatively cutting them. Personally I don't really care if my bases don't survive as I don't have a use for the way I made them.
Curious if anybody has other solutions.

Warm water should get rid of the PVA. Soak the bases for a while and scrub with an old toothbrush and the flock should just come off.
Alternately you can use a sharp blade to slice off the flock/PVA quite easily.

I was refering to the actuall 'grass' on the bases not the models themselves (sorry if I didn't make it clear) although I used plastic glue on the models themselves.

If it was me, I'd consider buying a bag of bases and starting fresh. I don't know if there is really an easy way to remove the flock, but others may say otherwise.

If you're covering it with other basing materials like sand/gravel then why not just spray black and stick new stuff over the top?

I would have done that but trying to get pva glue onto the flock to cover up without the flock sticking to the brush is a nightmare so it's probably just as easy taking it off, plus it would save re-painting feet if I sprayed it.

I just popped the mini off and took an exact-o knife and scraped it all off. The base ended up with gashes in it, but that was covered up when I redid the base anyways.

I just leave the bases in water and let it soak overnight. a few knife scrapings in the morning and any sand/flock/whatever comes off instantly.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
