So after being into warhammer for a long time, I've noticed a very common trend for most people, including myself. Ever find how you see a line of models you just love. Love the fluff, story, models, backround etc....and then decide "why not, I'll invest and go all the way with them guys". About 4 months later when you're done painting a couple squads of guys, you read some internet post, or hear a convo from some fellow gamers, discussing all the flaws in every army. Yours comes up. For whatever reason, it feels like when compared to other forces, you decide "Man, how could I have not seen that? I would much rather play THESE guys over here, now that I think about it"

So you switch. Then switch again. The vicious circle goes on.

Until recently I had this problem, until I accepted the one certain, unchangeable truth...it really doesn't matter. Every army has weaknesses and strengths, and all that really matters (more so beginners) for most people is if the models appeal, and if the backround fits.

Common enough to happen to anyone else on here? How many armies did you bounce around with before you found the first one that really caught your eye?

When fist getting into the game I had fear that this might happen to me. But! I was able to overcome it by following what I really, really like. The Undead. As an added bonus of getting Necrons, it turns out they are the absolute worst so whatever army I picked up next would be an amazing thing, game-wise, compared to what I had been working with. No downsides what-so-ever!

I had that problem when I played about 9yrs ago. I started with WHFB Vampire Counts. I actually got a full 1500pts with VC. Then I went to Dark Elves. Then Lizardmen. Then Warriors of Chaos. Then I found 40k.

Started with 'Nids. Soon went to SM. Then Tau. Here I got a full 1500pts. Then IG.

Except where otherwise noted, I only bought 1-2 units per army before changing my mind.

However, now I am getting back into the hobby, I have become adamant on not moving on before I have completed each project as I fully intended it when I set out. Hopefully I can stick to that!

haha. I hear that. For me i've actually been holding out for Dark Eldar for years. I always wanted to do 40K, but just never really wanted to get into any other army but DE. Things are different now, I like the new GK and Orks have always held a special place in my heart, but with new DE models Im pretty excited. I don't care if i'll get stomped for the first 20 games. Can't beat cool models and an awesome story line!

I am not that easily swayed as i see you are. I had my eyes on Orks from the first time i read the codex! Just because they got a cuple of weaknesses (as all other codices do) it will not stop me from playing that army that i like the most. If someone starts pointing out my weakness of my army like my Orks only got B 2 and AV 6 i can only laugh at that! And say well let's settle it on the table and let's see

I am sorry but i am going to be a little harsh here. Why on earth do you listen to what others say about that army you have chosen for yourself? You should stick to what you like the best and most comforting for you to play with! Not what others say is the best. If you are starting to dislike your own army just because someone bad mouthing it i just can't comprehend that... Good that you have finally chosen an army your sticking with. But please let it be an army you like because you think it's awesome. Not because someone said it's the best army!

That WAS harsh. I may have a tear or two.

But you are right for sure. I used to be so easily swayed. I think for me its cause I was waiting for DE, so I figured I'd get into another army to bide my time....but I guess they never really held an interest like DE did. I just couldn't get over the old DE models TBH. THankfully things change!

Orks are great tho hey? I'd love to collect one day but man, too many models! you have more patience than me.

What makes me decide to do a new army has nothing to do with the codex. All it takes is for me to come up with a colour scheme and I get the itch to do it. I'm not very good at tactics so the codex means very little to me when starting a new army.

For me it wasn't so much that I heard said army was bad and decided to scrap the project. Rather, I just got attracted to shiny things that looked cool in other armies (rather like an orc I suppose) and ended up changing my mind. I guess it was hard because there was no one race I was really set on.

As I got back into the hobby, I waited for the GK release for about 6 months before deciding what to collect (the new models failed to enamor me, so Deathwing it is!). I suppose that's kinda like the OP's wait for DE, minus doing any projects to bide time. I just kinda spent the six months looking at my options with armies (as well as figuring out how I am going to afford this hobby again!). I hope/think this time around I've given enough thought to all the shiny parts of each army to have made a choice that will best keep my interest.

Hehe okey yeah i can follow you about the DE. If it wasen't because i played Ork myself and i am first starting my second army when i am done collecting Orks i would have started on DE myself. Even before the new 5ed DE came. Always been facinated by these evil barsteds loved the 3ed Codex as a goodnight read.

Oh and as for collecting Orks some day. Yeah alot of models and a hell of a work. I got now... 100 units i think? A hell of alot of paint and time is put in playing orks but i injoy it all the way but you could actually just try buy a cuple of orks for a 500pt army? You know for casual gaming and fun Then you can always expand if you ever feel the need to it.

Somewhere in the dark...

Never! I would not ever change my army. It's just something I don't do - when I choose a side or whatever, I stick with it. Sometimes it's kind of like cutting my nose off to spite my face but I just feel a loyalty to my original choice that I can't ignore.

It's just like when I used to play Final Fantasy 11 and everyone in my linkshell changed nation allegiance to Sandoria, I stuck with Bastok even though it was practically deserted because everyone preferred a different nation. It's the same with mobile phones - I'll never go to the dark side and get an iphone because I like HTC.

In keeping with that, I'll never collect another army besides Grey Knights.

The sink.

Yeah I'm easily swayed.

I went from Chaos Warriors to Skaven on the basis of the Children of the Horned Rat. Then I got Dark Elves because it was the new hot sauce. 40k I've always like chaos marines but I've dabbled in orks, blood angels, demons, eldar, and guard. I own every recent codex but Nids because they don't appeal to me. But when a friend of mine was selling his Nids ... I was tempted.

I'm doing much better with my Warmachine armies. I built up large Khador and Cryx armies before starting new forces. Currently starting up Menoth.

This i can relate to! There is some kind of loyalty about collecting the army you have soley chosen because you like it!. I could never betry my Greenskins and start on another army. I am at some point making a secondary army but that is first when i have got all the Ork units i want! So i won't feel that my orks are unfinished. I think you could do the same mate won't your grey knights feel a bit lonely on your shelf?. If i was playing GK i would have starten a Daemon army just for the kicks and fluff ;D

This. I've either played or collected nearly every 40K army. When I started 40K a long, long time ago, I played Eldar. They've always been my #1. They still are - I have about four full shelves of Eldar models in my 40K closet. Then, my next love was Tyranids. I played them for years.

But after that, I started to look all over the place. It was like I had two armies, now I can play around with the third. It started with 5th Edition when I realized that I could fund my hobby simply by selling off old armies. So, at one point, I sold my Tyranids and picked up Daemons. I played them for a long while (placed in 'ard Boyz with them), but then they started to fade for me. So, I sold them for IG. Since, I've been through Wolves, BA, Space Marines, Necrons, back to Tyranids, back to Daemons, back to Wolves, Tau, now I'm back to IG.

While it is all well and good, I am starting to grow tired. I've played nearly all of them and I'm realizing what the OP realized - they all have flaws and weaknesses. I should do what I did with my first two armies - play what I enjoyed playing. Play what I loved. So I have been. I have my Eldar (as always) and I have returned to my second love, Tyranids. I now have another full bookcase of Tyranid models in my 40K closet and I am brewing a IG regiment that I feel is going to be lots of fun to put together and play.

I think the rules for IG overwhlemed me a bit and I didn't give them the chance they deserved to be played. So, to put it mildly, ADD yes. Maybe even on the brink of OCD.

Well i started out with Orks, then after a coupel fo months went to SM, then Tau, Then Space Wolves. i just switched army to army never collectign a complete force. then what 3 yeasr ago i started with some Chaos Marines. built them up to a good sized force. Then i just built up on all my armies. I actualy had got many forces built up because i learnt to spend a longer time on one army. Then the Dark Eldar came out. I stopped in the middle of my Orks army building mode. And i fell in love with Dark Eldar. Just collected them non-stop. Was proxying and scrtachbuilding all models int he codex pretty much. Dark Eldar and Grey Knights are my two favourite armies. I love the so much i ahve written fluff based on both armies. Also a a couple of books about my own character who is an Apothecary in a (now) Paladin Squad who got captured by my own kabal etc. With the new GK codex coming out i am hoping to re-write a couple of the books and write soem more. Some our from my the GK charcters point of view. Some from an overlooker. Some from the DE characters poit of view.
I also have collect WHFB armies as well. But only two Skaven and High Elves.

DE - 3000 points Orks - 3500 points GK - 1750 points SM (Ultras) - 2500 points BA - 1750 points SW - 2000 points Tyranids - 1500 points Necrons - 1500 points CSM - 1750 points Tau - 1500 points
HE - 2000 points Skaven - 3500 points
Forgotten Kingdoms - 1000 points Protectorate of Menoth - 175 points

Not really. I've stuck with my CSM since I started 40k, with the decision to stop at about 2000 points (which will be reached once I get my final Rhino in about a week ) and start the next army. This was going to be Mordians, until my wallet told me otherwise, so I've decided to go with Cadians. However, I can't steel myself to buy my first non-spikey box. I guess change scares me .

I switch. A lot. Space Wolves are the third army I've built and the fourth time I've bought a 1500 point force since September.

I don't necessarily do it for the same reason, although I do think my hobby would be more enjoyable if I had never found sites to discuss/bicker about armies on. I'd build what I want and not what the internet thinks is good.

I used to have Fantasy ADD, had about 6-7 Army Books back in the day... At the height I think I had Dark Elves, Dwarfs, Empire, Lizardmen, Bretonnians, Ogre Kingdoms, Orcs and Goblins and Warriors of Chaos. All of which were no more than 1,000 points...

But now, with help, (and an increased skill in painting! =D) I've slowly crawled myself to the point where I have about 2-3 armies, all of which grow at a somewhat healthy pace.

Starting out in 40k I was a powergamer from the beginning. All I cared about was winning and having the perfect all comers list but now I am starting to see the other side of the coin. I started reading the Horus Heresy books and I really enjoyed the Fulgrim book. So right now i've decided to build a CSM Emperor's Children themed army with a few DPs despite the new GK Codex coming out. I don't care whether or not it does good so long as I enjoy playing the army which I am pretty sure I will.

Exactly what I did. I started playing a little over a year ago, and my first army of choice was Necrons. I still dust 'em off now and then and own people 1 out of 3 games (lol). I moved on to blood angels, because that army appealed to me, then daemons... now grey knights... crap, I guess I am easily swayed. I really enjoy all of these armies fluff wise, and the rules for all but the Necrons are very good.

In Warhammer 40K, you're expected to pay cash out of your pocket for the privilege of having Marines and IG trample all over your Xenos/Chaos.

I am the model waffling new player. Let's see:

Started off with Ultramarines and bought the paint set to start. Then I got the SW codex and bought a ton of paint and painted those Ultramarines from the paint set as wolves and bought a battleforce of SW and a razorback. Then I got curious about Necron and bought the codex. Then I got interested in painting some DE and bought the codex and a box of Kabalite Warriors.

Now I bought the 3 pack of CSM to paint and am looking at starting them (have not even assembled the SW battleforce or even have a playable army yet ) or some Grey Knights.

Hooray indecision that cost me probably half a grand so far. Oh, did I mention I started at the beginning of this year and work a day a week?

Not really, as I think I've lost 90% of the games I have ever played. Though all buy like 5 of those games were with my "I'm a poor as crap High School kid, so sticking with the models I have as I can't afford others" And my IG, ughh, they are getting retooled to actually possibly win a game now and again though.

But buying new armies so I can be competive? Nah, I mainly play for the flavor of the armies involved. Now, I do get that itch to pick up a new army when I read some new fluff I really like, though luckily that just means buying/converting a few things for the IG guys and not a whole new Army. Though a Pre-Heresy SM army does sound fun....
