What are some really good black library books, that are really popular and you found very good? I ask because i am leaving for a trip soon and need 2 or 3 books to read, it can be about anything but preferably if the book had the Imperial Guard as it main army that would be good, but whatever works. Thanks!

New Mexico. Look, a UFO!

It's not IG, but i finished reading these two recently and they were both really well written:

I like the story of the Night Lords, CSM who don't allign themselves with any of the Dark Gods. Fear the Alien has a lot of different stories about the non-human races, including one from the perspective of Orks. It also has two stories that tie-in to both the Night Lords and the Salamanders. Overall they were pretty entertaining.

Buy the Eisenhorn Omnibus. Best fiction in the 40k setting by a long way.

The ravenor omnibus is pretty good too, as well as the gaunts ghosts series. There is also 18 hours, or at least I think that's the title.

I'm going through the Ciaphas Cain series. If you want a more light hearted, fun read then the first omnibus is a good choice. Plus, it is about the Guard yet not as serious as Gaunt.

The thing I don't understand about the Titanicus cover are the marines. I kept expecting marines to show up but they never did. I think I would have enjoyed it more knowing there were no marines in it. Awesome book though.

I never noticed those guys. I don't think they're on the original hardcover cover. Maybe they added them on the softcover to try to get more sales from marine fanboys.

Artwork wasn't made for the book.. which is just tacky. Just goes to show how bothered BL were about its release, eh? Heh.

Nonetheless, still pretty great and fairly iconic (perhaps not so much nowadays, it seems) piece of artwork. It sort of puts a fair bit of perspective into the Warhammer 40,000 universe; not every battle is won by heroes, and even the greatest death machines of them all can be felled.

Well you don't need to make something new when you've already got something that awesome to put on the cover.

We're discussing books on a wargaming site. Are we pariahs among social outcasts?

I jest. I am in no way suggesting we are social outcasts or pariahs.. though I speak for myself there!

The Gaunts Ghosts books are really very good. Dan Abnett is, without a doubt, the best writer BL has.

I'd also recommend his Titanicus and Double Eagle for the same reason.

Graham McNeill is also very good, but I find the Ultramarines stories incredibly dull. If you want action-movie middle-of-the-road teenager's action novels, they're fine, but...

I second Mechanicum. Excellant book.

I also second the Ciaphas Cain series. Very good.

Make sure to pick up the ones I suggested sometime - arguably the best two series in the entirety of Black Library, alongside the Ciaphas Cain(sp?) novels, but I base that assumption off of their reputation only.
