So i've seen the updates for DE, new models look great and all, as everyone knows. How are they holding up game wise? Still just as awesome as ever? Is their strategy similar to before, or did new codex rules create some different play styles?
I ask because most people i've talked to all would agree that playing DE to start would be 'suicide'. Is the learning curve really that bad? Or will it just take a dozen or so games of getting my butt kicked to learn how to play them properly?

I havn't had a chance to read the new codex, so I apologize for the simple questions. Thank you for your time all.

The new DE codex is quite powerful, albeit not overpowered like several recent codexes. However, it is extremely unforgiving, mainly due to their fragility. Simple mistakes can and will cost you the game more often than with something more durable like SM.

Sounds like they're in the same boat as Tyranids, not too strong and not too weak.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

The learning curve is much larger than SMs, that's obvious. But you'll catch on pretty quick how to play them, as with all armies.

EVERYTHING is wearing tissue paper as armour. They're INCREDIBLY flimsy, but they can be devastating if played right.

They still have a steep learning curve, but have far more options than Darklight spam now. Nice mix of shooty and CC in there. Still super fragile, but they have tons of killy options to make up for it. Then throw in fluffy and unique rules/wargear.

In general it's a very well done codex. There's only a few poor entries in the codex, namely Grotesques, Mandrakes, Harlequins. But they aren't so horrible that one unit of them will destroy your list.

asimo - Grotesques arent all bad
I usually throw urien with 4 of them.

2 pain tokens to start, so they have FNP and FC.
Paying 5 points for another +1 strength is also pretty handy.
Each one is throwing out 4 S7 attacks on the assault, and thats not including an aberration + his upgrades ontop of that.

Also keep in mind that being T5 they can take a beating and shrug it off, unlike anything else in the book.

OT: Not a massive change really in terms of playing them.
A small fault will set you back a bit, a large one will cost you a game from time to time.
In general though its still a case of raider spam and keeping everything on the move.

List wise though things have changed quite a bit.
If your looking into a themed list there are plenty of possibilties now, not all effective though.

Special characters are a bit steep on points and all except draz are missing eternal warrior (with a massive T3 lol)

Just make sure your units work together and keep threats away or dead and your fine.

The learning curve is pretty steep, but if you're a competent player then you should be OK. Dark Eldar though are a great army at the moment; great models, powerful, balanced, varied...

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

I like dthem enough to make them my second army. I don't want to paint more power armor stuff and wanted something that plays different from MeQ.

I antecipate having some nasty defeats until I learn their proper range, deployment and what goes where. But the codex has such a fast, deadly feel to its units and rules that it has to be fun.

In Boxing matches, you actually get paid to take a dive and make the other guy look good.

In Warhammer 40K, you're expected to pay cash out of your pocket for the privilege of having Marines and IG trample all over your Xenos/Chaos.
