Question for tournament goers,

Are Ymgarl Genestealers a viable option for tournies? They can only deploy in area terrain but how much of this is present?

Thanks

Shameless self bump, anyone familiar with the amount of area terrain typical at tournaments or is it totally random?

It will tend to be fairly random, some TOs seems to like to have a plan for the battlefield, some just randomly spread the terrain. I've almost never seen a gameboard laid out where something wouldn't have counted as area terrain, but there are as many types of boards as there are players.

Re-reading the rules for the Ymgarls, I would wonder if you could possibly try to establish where "area" terrain is on the field before the exchange of lists, as an unscrupulous opponent would most assuredly try to declare nothing as area terrain after knowing that these guys could pop up unexpectedly.

There's no victory without risk, and you must weigh the risk of there being no area terrain in one game with the possibility of having some and deep striking some living meat cleavers in another.

anything that's not an obstacle or a fortification is area terrain. i especially love playing with ymgarl when there is a river all over the mat

I'm both orderly and rational. I value control, information, and order. I love structure and hierarchy, and will actively use whatever power or knowledge I have to maintain it. At best, I am lawful and insightful; at worst, I am bureaucratic and tyrannical.

I've used them in a tournament, to devestating effectivness so bye bye Death Co in one of my games. Most people don't expect them either. And yes, they must be deployed in area terrain.

Re-read their rules they can always set up normally if you wish.

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.

Well, Duh! Because they had a giant Mining ship. If you had a giant mining ship you would drill holes in everything too, before you'd destory it with a black hole

Can you? I always thought they had to set up in terrain. My bad.

What's annoying is that deployment type should have been exactly the same for Lictors, and it would have made them instantly a viable option. Since Cruddace loved copy/pasting rules in that codex, you'd think he would have done that instead of writing up 2 almost identical rules except one was broken.
