Power gaming is such a subjective thing... A power gamer for some might only be a guy that takes a strong list. Some might see a power gamer as someone who aims to win, note that that doesn't make the guy a WAAC! IMO, no, power gamers seldom ruin my games, taking a list is within the rules, and unless we had something special (I.e: Take weak lists!) I don't care much about what the opponent is using. Cheating is another matter entirely. EDIT: And also, the poll might be one of the "black/white"est I've ever seen.

Typically, a power gamer isn't someone who scrutinizes your every move to make sure you aren't cheating, because they tapdance on the line of cheating themselves. Typically, my experience with power gamers are the guys who have methodically calculated everything, to exclusion of the actual point of the game: fun.

Arrr its the same old thing anyone that beats you on the table is a power gamer anyone you beat is a noob eh?
Not trying to troll but I hate playing full on casual players they never know the rules and rarely have the models or skillz to field a decent list or play it well and the games take for fething ever as your opponent seems to think that having some vague idea of his own models stats or rules is less importent then the 32 pages of fluff he has written for his armies.
See this games takes all sorts =)

Sorry i thought the whole point in gaming was to have " Fun " Actually enjoy the game, Ive played plenty of gamers that want to win at all cost and play by the rules that dont scruitinise on ever little thing you do making each turn last nearly twice as long, By turn 2 im bored and want to just pack up. Im not having a go at those who are extremely competitive just those that take the game ... Far Far to seriously, Fair play if its worth somthing but not if its a quick friendly game.
This post is very black and white.... I posted in a rage after spending over an hour setting up and getting ready for a " Friendly " game that turned out with me feeling as thou i was being interigated on gaming ability.

Perhaps you should learn to play by the rules and stop cheating. Then, you won't get called out on things as much.
I like to play by the rules, you know.

This isn't a good question to post on an internet forum... the trait that makes people WAAC powergamers is the same trait that makes them want to look 'knowledgable' on the internet.
FYI - Just because someone wants to have a fun game and enjoy a hobby - doesn't mean they don't know the rules. Just because you know the rules to warhammer doesn't mean chicks think you're hot

Im just grateful that wargaming has come far. I remember back in the day with WHFB, there were some plain stupid, cheap rules out there. I remember when you could high fly your units, so they were basicly like keeping a unit in reserve at all times, and they can come down anywhere on the battlefield. If your unit broke, it would be run down instantly by a flying unit and destroyed. Doesn't sound so bad, but when you were facing a Chaos army, before they took daemons, beastmen and warriors into seperate armies, it was hard to avoid.
Things are much more balanced now. I can deal with some nut cheating or trying to power game, cause even someone cheating is not as bad as the rules back in 1995. I can't even imagine how bad it was in the 80's.

My gaming is fine and as for the cheating post...... What part of this forum did you get that from? The point i was trying to make was that my gaming rules are fine! even thou i done everything correct i was still being picked up.... for example, Simlpy moving a unit foward 6" Then comes the " Can they move 6"? Was that 6"? Where does it say they can move 6"? " and so on..... this will continue threw the full game for every little thing i do ( Correctly non the less!!! ) Still 10 qestions on everything..... " Can they do that? I Didnt see you roll that dice roll it again!!! ( The reason he didnt see me roll dice was because his head was buired in the rule book/ codex for the entire game) I wasnt having a go at people playing correctly as i myself do, Just simply people picking at everything!

What does that have to do with power gaming? Asking you what you're doing and why doesn't make him more likely to win, does it? Most power gamers know the rules extremely well - that sound more like someone who's still learning the rules (or is just being a git)

No, the OP is accidently mixed up the words "powergamer" and "douche" (although I can see where he went wrong)
...and checkers is more complicated than 5th Ed

There are munchkins to be found everywhere, but I find more than my fair share playing GW's games. Perhaps it's the nature of army lists that can be number crunched ad infinitum that promotes this behavior.
I prefer fluff oriented lists when I play casual games with like minded folks where a 'story' is built and a grand campaign is wrung out of it. I'm lucky to play these more often than not, but then, I'm a member of a really great gaming group.
Fluff almost always gives way to power when gaming competitively. The nature of the table top game is to win and not to lose. So I don't really understand the 'power gamer' hate. That is, unless you like losing or don't mind the odd loss or two.
Perhaps you mean the attitude many of these super competitive folks have when they play a 'friendly' game? This I would understand.
Power gaming is really the only way to play if you play to win a game. Is there any other way?

I've never understood checkers. Just doesn't click.
I've got to say, I'm guilty of enforcing the rules of the game to the letter not the spirit.... but only when I don't like the person I'm playing for some reason. bit weird... sometimes it might be they're wearing a silly hat, other times because they've tried to cheat.

I have definitely found WAAC players annoying. This last Wednesday we played a 'fun' 2 v 2, 1000 points each 'Why the hell not?' game. It was probably hte most why the hell not? game I've ever played simply due to the fact that my army was a single Warhound Titan. It was simply an excuse to field an awesome model and watch in blow some crap up, while the other players had fun trying to kill it.
However, I ended up teamed up with a WAAC player, who managed to ruin the game....I mean, I'm all for winning. I like to win. Winning is fun. However, it got to the point where the game wasn't even fun....I can't exactly describe why, but you could tell just from the way people felt about it.

Like everything else in 40k...It depends. I'm fuzzy on my rules in places with the various editions all blurring together, and if I make a misstep I *want* to be called on it. I'd much rather be corrected than be an unintentional cheat....Buuuut...
If you start things off with "Hey what the h--- are you doing? You have to allocate X/Y THIS way not THAT way stop trying to cheat!" i'm likely to find better wastes of my 2-4 hours than dealing with you, and it probably won't take me long to decide that I should try to.
If on the other hand, if you go "You know, that IS how that used to play out, but they've changed it in the current rules/I have a new codex and they've changed that piece of wargear!" and then if I feel it necessary to grab a rulebook/FAQ or have you show me in your codex the issue in question you don't get bent out of shape and start namecalling, i'm perfectly fine.
It's not too much to ask me to play by the rules, and provided i'm not being a complete TFG about it I expect the same when the roles are reversed.
I don't care if you don't have your rulebooks and codexes are storebought or PDF, I don't care if your armylist is printed out from the latest version of armybuilder or written in pencil on a notebook, But I damn well DO care about some things: the other player pulling units that are not in his codex onto the board because "Armybuilder let him do it!" I care about their unit throwing out illegal amounts of powerfist attacks followed by them throwing a hissy fit when I remind them that "Hey, powerfists don't get the +1A from a pistol anymore..." ....For the third time. If you think something might be a point of contention, PLEASE check out the FAQs. If there is one, print it. Bring it with you in your codex. That will help both of us a lot. Arguing with me with your rulebook or FAQ in hand is going to get you miles farther than "Well my memory is perfect!"
I am not here to play Houserules 40,000. If you want to, that's fine so long as you tell me thats your intention and you're fine with me possibly replying with "No thanks, not today." If you have trouble with your memory or you get caught up in the game and forget things then that's cool, I certainly do! But lets ATTEMPT at staying inside the GW rules eh?

You guys are right...I hate power gamers.
I mean, I was playing tic-tac-toe the other day with this guy that plays X's. I had a great plan....
But then he ruined my fun by telling me that the rules say that you can only play X's and O's, and he wouldnt let me play my V's when he saw that I was going to win.
I mean, what a WAAC tic-tac-toe power gamer. I hate sticklers for the rules...they just ruin everyone's fun.
