Is it acceptable to spray a basecoat of, say, red, on primed infantry models?

Ermm acceptable for what?

If you use matt spray you will be able to paint over it.

Yes it's fine as long as you don't go overboard with it. I say this because it's easy to use too much spray and you'll lose all the detail on the model. Use short bursts and let the paint dry a bit in between passes.

The best thing to do is get a primer that is the color of your basecoat. IE red primer.

Attention all space marine bashing neckbeards: Nobody cares what you have to say, so stop trying and go cry yourself to sleep.

I'd be nervous about losing the detail if you were doing something like spray-priming black and then spraying another layer of basecoat. I can usually already see hints of blending after just the one spray (I admittedly have a bit of a heavy hand with it though).

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Observations on complex unit wound allocation: If you're feeling screwed, your opponent is probably doing it right.

You can do it, just be very careful. My entire Khorne-themed Chaos army was painted this way. Actually, the process was black primer > red spray > black wash > red drybrush > details, and I didn't have a problem with lost detail. You have to be VERY very careful but it saves you a lot of time.
