http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1368755/I-m-getting-laid-teacher-Woman-arrested-having-affair-student-confesses-uncle.html

A female teacher at a Washington State school has been arrested and placed on leave after allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old student.
Barbara Jeanne Anderson, 37, was booked into King County Jail last week suspected of first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor and was released pending charges after a pupil's mother grew concerned about the maths teacher’s relationship with her son.
Court documents also revealed the student had told his uncle he was ‘getting laid by a teacher’.
The teacher has been placed on administrative leave and her case is being forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office to be reviewed for possible formal charges.
A police investigation began on March 8 when the pupil’s mother approached staff at Kentlake High School after she discovered an ‘inordinate number of text messages between her son and the teacher’, King County Sheriff’s spokesman John Urquhart said.

This happened at my school, BTW.
And some people wonder why homeschooling exists.

I am frankly amazed the Daily Mail picked up on this story. It's not normally their cup of tea at all.

Considering the extremely low number of incidents like this the reasons for homeschooling rarely have much to do with it. It usually has to do with keeping children from learning science and alternate points of view.

i saw this article on Fark.com as well... i think the poster on fark had it best... that Uncle is a giant... well you get where i'm going with that... he's a nark, and should never be trusted with anything ever again. Come to think of it, he probably only ratted the kid out because that was the teacher he wanted to hook up with when HE was in school and that age.

Strange, I thought it was because homeschooling parents want their kids to be successful.

Although I suppose if you think only religious people homeschool their kids, and that religious people are inherently anti-science and pro-brainwashing their kids, this type of argument would be persuasive.

Whaaaaaaaaaaat? My parents sent me to catholic school because the local public schools were a joke. When I got to college my profs would always ask if I went to private school, because I had manners and could read and write.

Thats hardly true.

I have met people who did homeschooling and they were fine and polite.

They wern't fanactics or someone who were scared of people.

I did homeschooling when I was working on a aprenticship and it was fine.

Point is the teacher was given a position of trust in looking after kids. She broke that trust, and that's the case whether the boy could give consent or not. So the school should fire her.

But incidents like this are hardly common. They're not a reason to homeschool your kids. One of the problem with the media circuses that develop around incidents like this is that they give no context to the issue, and people are left with the impression that it's far more common than it really is.

All kidding aside this is also why it wouldn't have mattered if he was 18. She would have been considered a person of authority and thus held to different standard then if it was just a random coupling of the same age. I don't recall off the top of my head the legal wording at the moment, though I'm sure someone will at some point.

It would be hypocrisy if people meant it. Sure, maybe a few do, but generally the jokes made are just that. If people felt that she/he hadn't done something wrong they would do more. Are the jokes inappropriate? Yes, but most jokes are. Many jokes popped up after the shuttle Challenger exploded but that doesn't mean people actually reveled in the deaths. Its how some people deal with the absurd.

Chibi Bodge-Battle wrote:Pretending that the lad done good and turning a blind eye doesn't make millenia of discrimination against half the population any more ethical.

And your internet white knighting isn't going to change the situation, especially since you don't seem to understand the complex sociological, psychological, and media forces that are at play. If you really consider her going to jail for what happened as discrimination, you have a pretty poor understanding of what discrimination is. If anything she will get off somewhat lighter than a male in the same situation. Especially if it were a male teacher and a male student. Now that is a media frenzy.
