Thinking of doing a very not so common Lamentor theme for a Blood Angels army.

I'm going to be getting some paints from Vallejo game colors and was wondering what primer color to use to achieve that effect? It seems very dark so maybe he used black? But from what I have read most people use white...maybe a brownish primer?

On another note how do you think the very fine detailed lines in the "indentions" of the armor was done? For example on the models itself left leg right above his shoulder pads. Those indentions on it's upper leg have been colored black. It's so clean and crisp. How was that effect done?

White would be a good base for yellow. Black would probably just muddy the color.

I second the white primer..

If you own an airbrush do:

Grey primer
White
Yellow of your choice

White primer for a brighter yellow, or try Army Painter’s bone color for a softer.

That does look like it was primed black and then painted with foundation colour mixes in thick but smooth lines.

It looks like it was black, then dark brown then layers of the orange foundation mixed with mayybe dheneb stone, but either way, its a very hard effect to reach.

IMHO I think you should use whichever colour primer you find easiest to look at. For example I always prime white, given my lighting conditions and the way my eyes are I can see the model and all its detail. Prime it black and all I can see is a big black blob and I end up getting paint on areas, simply because I wasn't sure what I was painting.

On the other hand I've heard people say they can't see a white primed model well, and it seems obvious/natural to prime in black.

Having said that, recently I've been priming in light grey to tone down the effect white can have on colours.
