Subject: Characters as a unit?

Hello Dakka. I primarily play empire, and my buddy and I play a couple friendly games everyweek @ 3k points level. I've experimented and played about every varient of empire as can be imagined but I just had a cool idea of something I can do with empire in 8th that you could not do in 7th and I thought it was neat but and i'm curious as to how to treat it. I thought it would be cool to field the empire version of Peg knights, meaning 4-5 caps on pegs. I don't remember reading anything in the BRB concerning this, and I would be interested in how dakka would treat this. Added note these captains each be equipped exactly the same. Can I make a unit of characters? I want the captains to move and fight together but theres some interesting time consuming problems if they're not a unit, and some possibly game exploiting things if they are. If they're not a unit then I have to roll each of their charges /ld/ whatever tests seperatly and in cc my opponent will have to allocate every attack on a particular cappy. If they are a unit then things are simplified for combat and tests but that means I can buff them with unit buffing magic like the sig beasts spell or other such nice things.' For anyone interested in this idea, the general thought is to run these cappy pegs with a wiz lord with lore of beasts and try to get all those nice nasty all char buffs on them. Just a fun idea as a viable winning strategy I think i'm putting a lot of easy killable points on the board. edit: clarrification

Characters can join each other to form units, yes.
The issue is that without any rank and file models, they have no rank bonus, no Look out Sir! save from cannons/template weapons and would generally be expensive against your hero/lord unit allocation.
That said, they would each have to be targeted individually in CC which would prevent over-flow wounds in CC.

Yes, you can do that with the pegasus. The pegasus are monstrous beasts so, they can join and make units.
I've tried it out with my Skaven once (a unit of 3 plague priests on giant pox rats). It was funny, but not very competitive.
If the game is for fun then go ahead, otherwise, units of characters generally don't do that well as they rarely make their points back and are a major drain on your hero allotment.

Thanks thats very helpful. Ya I don't think it will be competative, but this is really just for "lol what??" factor.

Units of characters rock.
I fielded a unit of 15 goblin heroes with great weapons, and did pretty well. Of course, those 15 heroes only cost something like 34 points each.
