I've caught up on the horus hersy books, and almost every chapter has been fully described now. So I was wondering, what are your three favorite chapters described so far, and why?

My three favorite so far have been the Thousand Sons, Word Bearers and the Space Wolves. The reason I like these three are for the same reason. They all had a deep belief or sense of mysticism. They believed in fate and of higher powers, which gave them a deeper sense of purpose. Ironic since the HH books focus on the destruction of religion.

What about you guys?

Dragons, man. DRAGONS.

Out right favorites? Death Guard. I liked the way they did things. Run straight in and shoot stuff. Bad A**. I liked the pre-heresy Word Bearers colors. Just plain old granite gray. No smurfs here .

In no particular order;

Space Wolves - They were bad-ass post-Heresy, even moreso pre-Heresy. I've yet to read Prospero Burns but the imagery of Russ and his sons was spot on in Thousand Sons. Deadly in the extreme, and not a Legion to be messed with.

Imperial Fists - Dutiful sons of Dorn and played a big part in the Siege of Terra. Not much in the way of personality though.

Word Bearers - Not always my favourite Legion, but the roots of Heresy started with them.

That's easy enough for me...Death Guard...pre heresy and post heresy..

For me, has to be World Eaters. Yes, they are a bit of a one trick pony nowadays in the 40k setting, but they weren't always that way. I'm fascinated by the transformation that must have taken place, the gradual slide into destruction that happened when they threw off the shackles of allegiance to the Imperium.

Secondly, I think they perhaps best resemble how I imagine shock troops of the future would operate, and really the original conception of what marines were supposed to be (and arguably, you could say this translates directly in real terms to their efficacy on the tabletop). It says in Rogue Trader:
"Space marine assault squads are equipped with hand-to-hand combat weapons such as chainswords, power swords and bolt pistols. Entry into buildings, or through the reinforced hulls of space craft, is gained using a las-cutter or phase-field generator. As the first wave of attackers goes through, casualites are always very high. The first troopers into the breach are almost inevitably shot dead instantly. Inclusion in an assault squad is a great honour. There is never any shortage of volunteers for suicide missions such as this."

Largely faceless, they rely on massive aggression and impact to literally steamroller their opponents, resulting in massive casualties on both sides but with the objective completed. None of this namby-pamby, "I smite thee, heathen" told by a guy who sounds like he wants to be in a 19th century German painting, and speaks with a He-man-esque echo. I imagine, the battlefields of the future would be far too deadly for any sort of chivalry or personality. Remember the original quote of, 'A thousand heroes dying unsung and unremembered.' There's would be a thankless task.

I've really tried hard to replicate that in my WE own army; largely just indistinct line troopers with very little in the way of heraldry or ostentation on their armour, and the characters which do exist are hard-bitten killers, who have rolled the dice many times and know that the next roll might well be their last.

Just my own conception of course, I rest my case for the World Eaters

That was most moving. I may add World Eaters to my list of favourites now. Why did the OP only limit us to three!?

Most of the World Eaters charms for me lies in the exploits of Angron and Kharn. Such awesome nutters.

Much as I love the BA, they are by no means by favourite chapter due to their lack of imperfection. I think more on the lines of Thousand Sons and Death Guard. The traitors seem to be described more in the HH series.

Firstly, small semantic difference.
There are NO pre-heresy CHAPTERS.
There were only pre-heresy LEGIONS.

Secondly. Imperial Fists.
Nobody likes the ultramarines. Nobody but noobs (and GW apparently), anyway, and the opinions of noobs rarely count.

There was a darkness in their hearts, and they unleashed it on Signus Prime long before their Primarch met his end

(Will be very interesting to see what James Swallow comes up with in his forthcoming HH book! )

For me its the Emperor's Children. I like Fulgrim and the way he and his men fought. Plus with them taking on so many Remembrancers (that's what they were called right?) I imagine that chapter being the most interesting to live with.

I liked alot of them. Alpha Legion is awesome.
Dark Angels Prehersey are completely cool and not secretive robed monks.
Blood angels before the stupid blood rage vampire war.
Luna Wolves they were just awesome
Thousand sons their armor and colors really really cool. And i want to paint my Librarians in their colors..
Death Guard were sooo cooollll, they were a really awesome legion a shame they went traitor.
Raven Guard haven't changed really.
Salamanders were just really cool being the black space marines around.
And then Imperial fists were really cool in the fact they were not angry all the time, they were great defenders and were really powerful and a huge legion.
I don't know what its about the horus hersey but I love its history.

Ultras - haters gonna hate no matter the reasoning, but I love 'em. They also channel a Greco-Roman vibe which I like alot (and so very much enjoy that they have been ear marked as being the ultimate marines! ) They also seem to be the most reliable to the emperors vision - not merely for thier own place, but for what the entire Imperium of Man should be about, judging from Ultramar.

Otherwise I like the T-Sons, and Luna wolves.

1. The Emperor's Children, hands down. They were perfect and Fulgrim was the man.
They were the ONLY legion allowed to wear the Imperial Aquila on their breastplates.

2. The 1000 sons were neigh unstoppable.

3. The Space Wolves, as cool then as they are today... but with 100% more Leman Russ.

Thousand Sons for me, their faith in the Imperium and Magicks, plus the tragedy that befell them when the time came for them to face the SW.
Close second is Night Lords, terror and efficiency combined to an unstoppable killing machines, the emperor's finest dirty fighters!
