Has anyone had any luck using model railroading terrain for 40k?

According to the Wiki, S or O scale should be about right, but I thought I'd ask here before I go looking in the real world.

Yep.

O gauge works fine for 40k - if a little large.
S is harder to get in my neck of the woods, even if a brother-in-law's mate DOES run a model railway store.

Gets pricier than using regular 40k stuff though.

An O gauge train terrain layout board can make a nice table to play on though (before track is laid all over it) and is price competitive with a RoB - but can't usually be broken down.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.
