This was an Apocalypse game that was played a couple of Saturdays ago. I was testing out one of the scenarios from the Battle Missions book to see how it would work as an Apocalypse game and one of the young-bloods (Andrew) wanted to play an Apocalypse game before he had to go back to Texas. The scenario was the Invasion mission. A warp rift is set up in the middle of the table and then 4 objectives (for this game, 4 pillars from the Arcane Ruins set) are placed halfway between the rift and each table edge. Demons enter the table either from the warp rift as if moving on from the table edge and/or they can deep strike normally. Non-demon models coming within 6" of the warp rift are automatically destroyed. The enemy's deployment zone is anywhere on the table and at least 12" away from the rift, so it is possible for the enemy to begin the game in control of all 4 objectives. For this game I modified the scenario in that if the enemy controlled at least one objective by the end of the game they automatically win. So, with that said, here is some info on the forces:

4000 pts

Imperial Guard with Space Wolves allies vs the Undead Horde (Demons).

Strategic assets:
Guard: Disruption Beacon (unmodified version)
Undead: Plague Storm

Formations:
Guard: Sternhammer's Wulfen Guard (all the Space Wolves allies were in this formation)

Special Characters:
Guard: Yarrick, Marbo, Harker
Undead: Epidemius, Kugath, Daemon Lord Aetaos'rau'keres (Goth-Mog)

The table set up:

The Guard deployment:

Turn 1: The Undead emerge from the warp rift.

Goth-Mog sets his sights on two Leman Russ Battle Tanks.

Goth-Mog summons a squad of ghosts (Horrors) to the battlefield behind the Imperial Guard lines.

The Undead Horde, with no shooting to do, run to spread out and grab the objectives.

The Imperial Guard now open fire on the emerging horde, setting their sights on Kugath and Goth-Mog.

Under a hail of fire, Kugath falls!

And Andrew celebrates Kugath's demise!

More to come!

Turn 2

Epidemius emerges from the Netherworld with a unit of Skeletons (Plague Bearers). Also emerging this turn is a unit of Rot Grubs (Nurglings), Gargoyles (Screamers of Tzeentch), and a Death Lord (Demon Prince).

The Gargoyles find a suitable target in the Baneblade, and turbo-boost towards it in order to assault it next turn.

Finding himself in range of an Imperial Guard squad, Epidemius utters an invocation of death, and members of Yarrick's squad find themselves stricken by a plague that quickly spreads to other members of the squad until one member injects himself with a counter agent, thus stopping the plague from spreading to nearby units.

Goth-Mog turns his attentions to the Sentinel Squad that had wounded him in the previous shooting phase, and utterly destroys them! Elsewhere on the field, the Undead continue to spread out from the rift and head for the objectives. Two Death Lords assault the Stormlord, ripping the engines from the mighty machine, and immobilizing it for the rest of the game.

In the Imperial Guard turn, Marbo comes out of the shadows to claim an objective, and is supported by a Valkryie carrying Veterans.

The Veterans disembark from the Valkryie in order to fire at the approaching skeletons, hoping to whittle them down before they overwhelm Marbo.

The LRBTs now turn their attention to the rampaging Goth-Mog, opening fire, but Goth-Mog shrugs off their vain attempt!

One Leman Russ fires its main battle cannon, but Goth-Mog swats the shell back at the Leman Russ, wrecking the tank!

The Baneblade and Basilisk open fire at Epidemius' unit, blowing several of the Skeletons to bits! Elsewhere, the Stormlord opens fire at one of the Death Lords assaulting it, and dispatches him back to the Netherworld.

What in the hell did he kill.....ohhhh wait you said Ku'gath, not ScabbieAthrax. Was thinking the Daemon Lord, not the named Greater Daemon.

Why the Tzeentch Daemon Lord? In a Daemons army, no less? Doesn't he have to shoot your own friendly daemon princes and greater daemons?

Because it fits in with the background story I had been developing for this army. Sort of a super Nagash/Sauron type character. When I read the rules for the Tzeentch Demon Lord, I thought it was the perfect choice to represent the character on the battlefield. And the updated FW rules for all the Demon Lords state that they feel they fit in better with a Demons army rather than a CSM army now.

Only if they are within 18" of him at the start of the shooting phase.

LOL yes, sure, if you go along with GW's new insane idea of "yeah CSM never use daemons. They just....daemons don't tend to appear in places the CSM arrive, you know? Just doesn't happen.".

They fit JUST FINE in a chaos space marine army. You just have to adjust their rules to fit with certain idiotic publishings. Between GW and FW, they've really screwed up a few things with these models, such as saying they can only be taken by chaos daemons [which is just ridiculous, though these only appear in apocalypse anyway so that's really a non-issue], and by giving Zarakynel the Warp Time psychic power and then saying that you can't use psychic powers on gargantuan creatures at ALL, EVEN friendly ones. So she....can't use that power?

Oh, don't get me wrong. I am a firm believer that marked demons should be allowed in a CSM army. But you asked why take the Demon Lord in a Demons army (as opposed to a CSM army I'm guessing?) and I was just giving some reasons. Main reason though is that the model fits in with the background of my army. I will have to reread the part about psychic powers and gargantuan creatures. I know powers without a strength value can't hurt them, but I will have to check again about a gargantuan creature using a power on itself.

Anywho, more turn by turn coverage of this game to come soon.

Turn 3

Final reserves arrive. Death Knights (Bloodletters) led by Skulltaker pour forth from the rift, as well as another unit of Garygoyles and a unit of Rot Grubs deepstrike off the icon in the skeleton unit near Marbo. The Gargoyles head straight for the Valkyrie, hoping to take it out with their razor sharp claws.

Goth-Mog moves around to the side of the Leman Russ to get a better view of the battlefield and to line up his assault on the tank. The Gargoyles move into assault position behind the Baneblade.

Goth-Mog summons another unit of Ghosts to the battlefield near the Imperial Guard infantry units to support the Rot Grub swarm.

One of the Death Lords engulfs the Veteran squad in infernal flames, killing 4 of their number and sending their souls to the Netherworld.

Assault time. The Rot Grubs assault the remains of Yarrick's squad, the Skeletons assault Marbo, the Death Lord assaults the Veterans, Goth-Mog assaults the LRBT, one unit of Gargoyles assault the Valkyrie, and the other Gargoyle unit assaults the Baneblade.

Goth-Mog destroys the LRBT, the Death Lord kills only 2 of the veteran squad, and the Skeletons kill Marbo. The Gargoyles assaulting the Valkyrie fail to damage it, but the Gargoyles assaulting the Baneblade manage to either destroy or get "Gun Crew Shaken" results on the majority of the weapons, leaving only a heavy bolter or two able to fire in the Imperial Guard shooting phase. Although Yarrick put up a valiant effort, the Rot Grubs overwhelm his squad and Yarrick is forced to fall back.

The Wulfen Guard enter the table edge near an objective and spread out to take on the advancing Undead horde.

The Valkyrie moves away from the Gargoyles in order to shoot at the Skeletons currently near the objective that the Wulfen Guard want to take and hold.

Yarrick rallies and an Imperial Guard unit moves into cover to fire at the Ghosts that have been harassing the rear lines. They end up wiping out the unit in the shooting phase.

The Valkyrie opens fire at the Skeletons killing only a couple. Gotta love T5, 5+ Inv, and FNP!

In the assault phase, the Gargoyles continue to assault the Baneblade. Slicing through the armor with their deadly claws, they manage to score 3 good penetrating hits....

...and the Baneblade explodes, leaving behind a huge crater!

The Death Lord fighting the Veteran Squad finally destroys them, and the Death Lord assaulting the Storm Lord, not to be out done by the Gargoyles, slices through the armor of the mighty machine and rips it apart as it explodes around him!

Thanks! I think it fits in well with the theme of the army and as a suitable "counts as" model for the Tzeentch Demon Lord.

Turn 4

With the Stormlord now nothing but a smouldering crater, the Death Lord turns his attention to the recently arrived Wulfen Guard.

The Gargoyles, having destroyed the Baneblade, now turbo-boost towards the Basilisk!

Goth-mog flies over towards the Imperial Guard Infantry units with the intention of turning someone into undead spawn.

The second unit of Gargoyles chase after the Valkryie in hopes of slicing it apart.

The Death Lord that destroyed the Veteran Squad now filies towards the Wulfen Guard and Imperial Guard.

Goth-mog spews forth an ethereal mist, and Yarrick feels his insides start to twist and turn...

...and what emerges from the ethereal mist is a foul, undead Yarrick-spawn!

The Rot Grubs assault an Imperial guard squad and a lone Commissar and wipe out the majority of them.

After killing 4 of the Wulfen Guard with the Wind of Chaos, the Death Lord assaults them and kills 3 more.

The second Death Lord assaults the Imperial Guard troops that had disembarked from the Chimera, kills a few, and forces them to fall back. However, in such a rush to get away from the dreadful Undead creature, the Guardsmen stumble and trip over one another, and the Death Lord catches them and slaughters them all.

The leader of the Wulfen Guard finds himself assaulted by the Skeletons determined to claim the objective for themselves, and although he strikes down a few of their number, the horde overwhelms the lone hero and tear him apart.

The Valkryie, unharmed by the Gargoyles attack, continues to fire at the Skeletons on the objective.

The Guardsmen in the ruins, with heavy hearts, fire upon Yarrick-spawn before he has a chance to assault them.

The Basilisk takes another shot at Goth-mog before the advancing Gargoyles get to it.

The Ratling snipers take aim at Goth-mog, but the puny weapons have no affect on him.

The Gargoyles assaulting the Valkyrie suddenly find themselves assaulted by the ferocious Wulfen Guard who savagely tear them apart!

In the ongoing combat between the Death Lord and the Wulfen Guard, the mighty combatants end up wiping each other out. Elsewhere the Rot Grubs finish off the Guardsmen they were locked in combat with.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Turn 5

The Gargoyles move into assault position against the Basilisk, Goth-mog moves to take care of the Ratlings who dared fire upon him last turn, and the last remaining Death Lord moves into attack the stationary Valkyrie.

Goth-mog unleashes the green mist of spawndom on the unit of Ratlings and turns them all into zombies!

The Death Lord destroys the Valkyrie, leaving nothing but a crater behind, and prepares to receive the assault of the advancing Wulfen Guard.

The Rot Grubs asasult the last Guardsmen squad hiding in the ruins. Energized by Epidemius' incantations, the Rot Grubs strip the flesh from Guardsmen and devour them in an instant!

The Gargoyles sink their teeth and claws deep into the armor of the Basilisk, ripping it apart and getting showered in debris in the process as the tank explodes.

In the Imperial Guard, the Chimera moves closer to the objective near it, and the Wulfen Guard assault the Death Lord. Although he strikes down 2 of their number, the fangs and claws of the Wulfen Guard bite deep, and the Death Lord is ripped apart in an orgy of carnage.

Turn 6

Goth-Mog and the Gargoyles move toward the Chimera, and the Death Knights and Skulltaker assault the Wulfen Guard, slicing them to pieces with their arcane blades!

With that the game ended, as the only thing left of the Imperial Guard was the lone Chimera, and it was destined to be destroyed by the fast approaching Goth-mog and Gargoyles.
