Okay I can't hold it any longer.
Why do so many people ask others what new army they should play?
It doesn't make sense to me.
Understand the, "I am undecided between x and y" and "what are the advantages/disadvantages
and what are the play styles please, vets?" type questions.
They seem sensible.
The generic ones are a baffling. Surely it comes down to personal preference.
But above all there is the search button, there must be tons of info on Dakka alone let alone the internet as a whole.
Doesn't anyone do a modicum of research any more?
thank you and GOM mode is now switched off for safety reasons.

personally as a realy young peep i asked my parents what to draw when not really in the right mood...
there you go...
anybody asking somebody what to play should regarding to my opinion switch to playing football or collecting stamps...
if i want to kill hours over hours of valuable worktime by painting, modeling minis that are normally used for wargames i should have a faint idea what to choose myself... i should have a charcter that tends to a certain type of army or even a certain type of coolness... regardless of the system i want to play with/in...
i think the next wave of stupid question related threads should follow thsi spirit and asking if someone should quit his current army...because...well...

When I used to wait tables I regularly had people that would come in and sit waiting for the rest of their group to arrive. While waiting I would at least get their drink to them. Sometimes people would want to wait for their friends to get their before they could decide...what to DRINK.
I would always say "ok" shake my head and make a note to talk slowly with few syllables to them.
Short answer?
People are Sheep.

Is this why you all waited for Chibi to post this thread before you agreed?
Honestly, some of the less-experienced ask on forums to get a feel and are genuinely interested in what others think.
This doesnt make them sheep, it means that they are more concerned with what others think than what they themselves think.

They ask because they have the wit to realise that we, the mob, are all knowing.
The majority define reality, therefore we define the most suitable choice for the individual.
If more people say the sky looks mauve instead of blue, then the sky is now mauve by dint of the gestalt concious of the larger number of the population who says it is so.
If more dakkanauts say that little Robert Jones of 3 Terry Wogan Close, Slough, should collect necrons because 'they are getting a new codex and are best friends with the blood angles and everything!!!' then the reality has shifted to young Master Jones being required to collect necrons because it is now his manifest destiny.
Frankly I'm disappointed you should ever have pondered such a rudimentary and obvious question... but since you have now put it forward, we the mob will tell you how it should be answered.

How did they fight Old Bogie across Europe if they were only but 2" tall? would be a great answer. Q: Dear Dakka, I am thinking of a 40K army which should I choose? A: Dear Newbert, we think you should field 6mm Nap Austrians FTW! just think of the cover saves.

It doesn't make sense to me.
I think it's more so they can have a discussion rather than actually wanting to have an army selected for them, or they may already have an army in mind, but need to find a theme (or vice-versa, need a suitable army to fit a theme they have).

Usually that's just an excuse, they don't want to look rude to their friends by 'starting without them' and at the same time think that if they say they are waiting for their friends to be polite they will look like a idiot, so they use a slightly less lame excuse in a vain attempt to not look like a fool!

Its true, people are sheep. for example, i am now in my forth (and final thank god) year of uni, and ever since first year my housemate and i (who also does the same course i do) inevitably arrive to our first morning lecture a bare 5 minutes before it starts. Everyone else will be waiting outside the lecture theatre (even those who have been there for an hour due to having to catch a train in the morning) knowing full well that since the first lecture is at 9, there is no-one in the room. My friend and i walk into the building, immediately walk into the lecture theatre (due mainly to both of us being far too lazy to want to stand there and wait), pick a seat, sit down and begin to unpack our stuff. when we look up, lo and behold everyone else has now decided they want to come and sit down as well, sheep, every single one of them! (even my other mates ) although i do also agree that people should bow down to the collective knowledge of the Dakka vets (of which i do not consider myself a member, yet )

So apparently asking others for advice makes you a "sheep".
Really, if someone doesn't know everything about the armies they are trying to decide between, there's nothing wrong with asking others about the army. I doubt they are asking because they want to play the army that the most other people play. They want to get a better understanding of it. Besides, in the end the others are only trying to convince them, the decision is still your choice.

But of course.
Thinking up a new line for the old classics is no easy task and deserving of credit.
Waiter! What is this fly doing in my soup?
Sir I do believe it is doing the butterfly.
Waiter! Did you know there is a fly in my soup?
Why I certainly ought to Sir! I put it there!
Waiter, which army would you recommend?
The Devilfish a la Cassuer with a Kroot salad is very popular since thearrival of the new menu, sir.
but why is it in my soup?
and so on and so forth.
