So I have been taking a break from my nids and have given a lot of though to a pure GK list. After a lot of fussing over what kind of list to use I have come up with something I think could be effective.

GK Grandmaster
3 servo skulls
Nemesis Warding Stave

Venerable Dreadnought
Assault cannon
TL autocannon
Psybolt ammo

Venerable Dreadnought
Assault cannon
TL autocannon
Psybolt ammo

5 man Purifiers
2x Psycannons
Daemon hammer
Razorback
TL assault cannon
Psybolt ammo

5 man GK strike squad
Psycannon
Razorback
TL assault cannon
Psybolt ammo

5 man GK strike squad
Psycannon
Razorback
TL assault cannon
Psybolt ammo

5 man GK strike squad
Psycannon
Razorback
TL assault cannon
Psybolt ammo

10 man GK interceptor squad
2x incinerator

Dreadnought
2x TL autocannon
Psybolt ammo

Dreadnought
2x TL autocannon
Psybolt ammo

I think that's 2k on the nose. Essentially it's a shooty army but it can slowly bring units to bear midway to the table. A few (expensive) razorbacks but equally they bring a lot more assault cannons to the table. The interceptor squad can help thin out hordes and late game go for contests with the shunt. The GK Grandmaster is there purely for the servo skulls, better control of reserves (interceptors) and the Grand Strategy (Scoring Venerable dreadnoughts...yes please), though with a nemesis warding stave he can hold out for a while against a more numerous foe and tie them up.

Do you dreadnoughts have psybolts as well?

If not, they should. It's only a 5 point upgrade to be able to at least glance every AV.

The only problem I'm seeing is your ability to handle multiple AV 14 targets (lemans for example.)

As I will not take credit for the words of others you will want to read this on why psybolt assault cannons suck.

Oops forgot to put it in but yes they do. Will check out why they suck...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok so I see why they suck. TBH I was going for a pure GK list (so no melta) and figured more S7 rending shots would be the place to find some much needed anti AV 14. I guess I could lose the razorbacks, replace with rhinos and throw in coteaz and chuck in some melta henchmen...

Hmmm, would have to rethink the majority of my troops choices if that's the case. Maybe lose a GK strike squad in the process.

So the new list would be:

GK Grandmaster
3 servo skulls
Nemesis Warding Stave

Coteaz

Venerable Dreadnought
2x TL autocannon
Psybolt ammo

Venerable Dreadnought
2x TL autocannon
Psybolt ammo

5 man Purifiers
2x Psycannons
Daemon hammer
Rhino

5 man GK strike squad
Psycannon
Rhino

7 man Henchmen unit
3x meltas
4x storm bolters
Chimera

7 man Henchmen unit
3x meltas
4x storm bolters
Chimera

7 man Henchmen unit
3x meltas
4x storm bolters
Chimera

10 man GK interceptor squad
2x incinerator

Dreadnought
2x TL autocannon
Psybolt ammo

Dreadnought
2x TL autocannon
Psybolt ammo

This would be a first incarnation so the storm bolters could go and get myself some more efficient nemesis force weapons loaded onto some guys...a stave on my small GK scoring unit could be valuable. An improvement?

Too many skulls!!! Staves are way overpriced for Grandmasters. The regular Nemesis Force Sword, which is FREE, gives him a 3++ Invuln already. Save your money.

Good.

For only 2pts a pop, halberds on purifiers are a no-brainer. Get 2 halberds for that squad.

Get at least 2 of these units, one to protect each flank against deepstriking armies. This is not a suggestion. It is necessity.

No, no, no! Don't lavish your warriors. Keep them cheap and dispensible....just a 5-man unit w/3 special weapons in a chimera is all you'll ever need.

Lukus83 wrote:

Bad, bad, bad! Not the right way to play them. Give them 2x psycannons and psybolt ammo and they will shine.

Good.

Not bad for a first attempt. Follow my advice and you won't go wrong.

Lol. Thanks for the response. TBH the henchmen are the unit that bother me the most. There are so many options it can get confusing. I will give the 5 man, 3 melta a try.

With the Interceptors the idea is for late game contests and grabs (if the GK gets a 3 for his grand strategy Unyielding Anvil...Venerables get it first). There are a lot of foot armies around in our local meta so I prefer the incinerator. Being able to go 30" then hit a horde unit on an objective with 2 templates is highly desirable. That said I can see that in a highly mechanized environment they would do better with the psycannons.

I was actually thinking of Halberds on the purifiers. Seems like a no-brainer to me too.

In our local meta not many people run deepstriking armies (except me) so I don't feel the need for the protection. If the local meta starts to change (or I join a tourney with more than 8 players) they will be the first thing added.

The skulls are there to deal with infiltrating TH/SS termies. One of our local vets likes joining Shrike to a 10 man unit and just watch things pop left and right. The skulls are insurance (and they are cheap enough for their purpose I think).

So If I change some stuff up we get:

GK Grandmaster
3 servo skulls

Coteaz

Venerable Dreadnought
2x TL autocannon
Psybolt ammo

Venerable Dreadnought
2x TL autocannon
Psybolt ammo

5 man Purifiers
2x Psycannons
2x Halberds
Daemon hammer
Rhino

5 man GK strike squad
Psycannon
Rhino

5 man Henchmen unit
3x meltas
Chimera

5 man Henchmen unit
3x meltas
Chimera

5 man Henchmen unit
3x meltas
Chimera

10 man GK interceptor squad
2x incinerator
Psybolt ammo

Dreadnought
2x TL autocannon
Psybolt ammo

Dreadnought
2x TL autocannon
Psybolt ammo

Now I have 76 points to play with. Any suggestions on what to put in? I'm thinking a few of halberds on the interceptors since they are likely to deal with hordes but a couple of I6 force weapons could work a treat against some tougher customers.

lol i really dis-agree with this they are great on RB 4 shots TL not many are going to miss and 4 shots your more likely to get a 6 than not and that 6 is already glancing av 13 so the d3 means hurting av14 will be pretty easy .

the only thing that sucks is the range admittedly but just strap on a hunterkiller missile 1st turn fire those 2nd turn pop smoke 3rd turn assault cannon hell for your enemies.

id rather take my chances than pray for 6 to glance a Land raider with the dreads who fill in the hole in the army but don't quite fit it i think the RB play to GKs strengths

Well I guess if you want to do pure GK's then assault cannons and psycannons are really the only option. But if you throw in the henchmen then you get cheap and easy access to melta so they aren't needed so much. Regardless I will be testing a couple of lists and see how they fare.

Yeah, there is always that tactic.....but why waste 4 turns of non-shooting with the more expensive incinerators when you can use the cheaper psycannons every single turn? And what if you're playing against a mech opponent, or if your opponent's got a vehicle on his objective instead of a horde?

If you want horde control, get a purgation unit with 4 incinerators in a razorback w/psybolt heavy bolters. And it's only 150pts!!! That's the right way to run incinerators in your army.

hmmm...hadn't thought of that. Now that has the potential for some real damage output. Most definitely something to think about.

I'm having a game today...will see how I do and can see how much I really need those interceptors. Taking them down to a 5 man unit and throwing in the purgation squad like you mentioned might be a more effective use of points.

Thanks for all your help so far. Absolutely great advice.

Ok didn't want to use the old list after having a think about the purgation sqaud...Game is in 4 hours or so and I have used the time to rebuild my list:

3x Servo Skulls

Venerable Dreadnought
2x TL autocannon

1x Master Crafted Daemon Hammer (justicar)
1x Psycannon
3x Force Halberds

5 Man Henchmen Unit
3x Melta
Chimera (multi laser, heavy flamer)

3x Force Halberds

5 man Purgation Squad
4x Incinerator
1x Master Crafted Daemon Hammer (Justicar)
Razorback
Psybolt ammo

Now I think this list gets a bit more overall mobility, a lot more resilience since there are now more mechanized elements and has more anti-horde guns. I also feel it doesn't sacrifice transport popping power since the 4 dreads should be plenty and the Venerables have real staying power. If I get into combat I could have some issues but I'm relying on halberds and daemon hammers to give me an advantage over tougher opponents (MC's, MeQ's etc) and I think I have enough templates to seriously thin out hordes.

So onto the criticism...Anything I missed?

So just bumping this to see if I can get anything else...I also noticed if I took away a few upgrades I could get a 4th unit of henchmen with meltas, albeit they would all be in rhinos instead of chimeras. Worth it?

Nice to know someone in china shanghai plays war hammer.

I used to live there! But now I am in England lol

back to the point. So how did the game go?

I will be doing a pure gk army with termis so I was thinking doing something the same but just with termis and maybe some purifer an purgation.

Faced any av14? I would like to know how you beat them. Also how will I beat them without the melta
