Soooo after reading through the Orcs and Goblins book it looks like GW is taking a new direction in this edition.

LOTS of unit choices, I think there are 7-8 choices for each rare, core, and special slot. Which imo is awesome since it adds variety and helps prevent the take XXXXX or lose.

The thing that I found the most interesting was the lack of magic items...

8ish iirc magic items specific to there army... Im only guessing that this is for balance reasons, since the BRB has SOOO many magic items, the are moving away from a bunch in the individual army books and having everyone take them from the same pool.

While this is great for balancing all the armies, I do feel it takes some individuality away from each army...

I agree with your magic item assumption (lack of individuality) but I'm not sure we can call anything a trend or new direction until we get a few more army books to compare the Orc and Goblin book to.

I don't think it really takes away.
O&G are a low leadership army, with animosity, choppas, and nets.
If anything, I'd say they are shifting the individuality from a handful of must take items, to the army itself.

And the infantry range for 5 to 7, which is low. So you have a cowardly army held together by a powerful warlord.
That's very different from dwarves or elves, where the generals leadership isn't nearly as important.

Also IIRC, O&G always had a ton of army selections, so it's not like that's entirely new for them either.
