I'll be honest....I didn't think NI would be leading the UK in being poor...

London with the urban poor does seem to make sense...

http://www.u.tv/News/NI-highest-for-bankruptcy-in-UK/d9c2f8c3-0ec8-407a-bbc0-7587b7c70177

Northern Ireland had the highest levels of bankruptcy recommendations in the UK last year, according to national debt charity the Consumer Credit Counselling Service.

Statistics for 2010 revealed that clients from NI had the lowest amount of disposable income, with just £55 less than they need to cover the cost of their living expenses.

Bankruptcy was recommended to almost 13% of local clients, while individual voluntary arrangements (IVA) were recommended 7.8% - both UK highs.

Delroy Corinaldi, CCCS External Affairs Director, said: "Although anyone, whatever their background, age and location, can struggle with debt, there are parts of the country where people debt problems appear to be more intractable.

"These debt cluster areas such as Northern Ireland need special attention in terms of helping prevent people from falling into unmanageable debt but also ensuring that those living in these areas are aware of the free debt advice and support that is available to them.

"They also need to be made aware that, given CCCS's capacity on its helpline and online debt counselling, there is no need for anyone to pay for debt advice."

London was identified by the group as another hotspot for debt. Alongside Northern Ireland, those were the only two regions in the UK where CCCS clients, on average, didn't have enough income to cover their living expenses.

Yeah, this doesn't surprise me much - remember reading somewhere that the public sector makes up around 70% of the economy in most parts of NI. It's also had a pretty troubled history for a prolonged period, making it not exactly a hotspot for outside investment. It's a very poor place, especially in the rural areas.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

Indeed. NI is not the world's most happening locale.
Lots of deprived areas and as Aby says, not much outside investment.

Saying that, I'm going there for a short holiday in about a fortnight!

I was up there a few times. I lived in belfast for a month doing a stats course during my PhD, and the area around Queens is nice. Some other areas, not so much. I want to get out and see some of the north coast though, because it's supposed to be pretty impressively rugged.

I've got family in Down, so I've been there quite a lot - it's got really beautiful countryside.

Same as any city really though DB.
There are areas of Dublin you'd need a tank to get through.

I'm from Belfast and N.I's not that bad a place. I agree its got some rough places but so do almost every other town. City centre and up round queens is ok, same with other parts.

You're holiday should be fine, its not like our towns are all empty now

Yeah, Belfast is hardly a warzone, but it's still a bit worse than dublin in it's worst bits, I think.
The area around the centre and Queens is nice, and there are some nice pubs around.

Well, I'll be out for a drink in Belfast in a bit, so I'll let you know how I get on...

You know what's weird? In all the times I've been to NI, all I've seen of the city is the ferry port and car-park.
