I have been listening to my current 40K podcasts (The Independent Characters) and they have plenty of guests and friends on. Almost all of their guests and friends started gaming by pkaying D&D and progressed to 40K from there. The same thing happened between all of my friends and I. How many people here on Dakka got into 40K after getting introduced to gaming by D&D? How common of an occurrence is this?

Other way around for me.

My brother brought Rogue Trader home when I was 7 or 8, and needed an opponent

Then he sold it :(

By then i was hooked.

I didn't get into D and D until i moved to the us, but 40k got me into Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I was introduced to gaming via D&D back in the mid 90's. I didn't start playing 40k until last year, so I'd say the two influences were separate, though I'd seen it played before.

I actually got into 40k from Dawn of War II.

Technically I started with Magic: the Gathering, then played DnD, and then got me some Warhammer 40k. As I look back, I remember that one ad campaign...
Games are my Anti-Drug (How am I supposed to afford them when 40k takes all my money?)

I was introduced to both at the same time, but only started playing 40k about... 6 months ago? ish? For the first time i can afford it. Personally I believe they're a gateway for each other.

I've never played D&D. I don't see it as a gate way game at all.

What do you do in D&D? Is it worth getting?

D&D is the oldest roleplaying game. RPGs are worth getting although opinions differ on the current D&D edition.

I also entered Fantasy gaming with D&D.

And so did Games Workshop! They even made their first money with getting exclusive European distribution rights for D&D by buying 5 boxes of the starter set ( http://web.mac.com/melfstrom/Warhammer/Early_GW_History.html ). They started with generic Fantasy miniatures for RPGs before developing their first own tabletop game. They made a special AD&D miniature range for 18 months ( http://www.dndlead.com/Citadel/Citadel.htm ) and the White Dwarf at that time included D&D adventures (and reviews on Fantasy products by other manufacturers).

Fighting Fantasy might argue with you there, but they're about the same age, and D and D is better known

I prefer Pathfinder (paizo's take on D and D 3.5) to 4th Ed.

D&D is the oldest, well-known, current RPG.
It's not the oldest, or necessarily the best, but it's where most RPGers end up eventually.

D&D is where I went after Fighting Fantasy books.
When White Dwarf was good, they did D&D articles. Then it announced 40k, and I went there instead.

I'm huge role-playing fan and only started playing 40K 12 months ago. I started gaming with Star Wars RPG in '87, shortly afterwards buying Space Hulk and Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play.

I bought a few AD&D 2nd Ed. books but I didn't start playing D&D until the mid 90's with 3rd Edition. Despite being a late D&D starter I still see it as one of the best RPGs, any edition, even 4th with the right Gamesmaster.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

D&D was definitely a gateway drug into warhammer. One of the guys i played DND with had an older brother who played WHFB, so we ended up collecting a playing. No one else sticked with it out of the group cept me, and I've been with GW for 15 years now collecting on and off. But yes, D&D was definitely the beggining of my end.

Interestingly, I got into Vampire: The Masquerade before I got into DnD.

Funny thing is my parents didn't want me to get into DnD (they wouldn't stop me, but they didn't like the idea), but had no problem with me playing Vampire since they hadn't heard anything bad about that one lol.

Back when Citadel made figures for D&D-type games. That'll have helped things along.

I dunno if DnD is a gateway to 40k, but to WFB? I can see that.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.
