For some time I've been thinking about modelling a Dread to go with my Space Wolves derivative chapter, the Brotherhood of the White Wolf but must admit I've never been that keen on the GW kits. To my eye they always appeared too dumpy, not exactly the way I envisioned them. Seeing the new Grey Knights DReadknight made me realise that I needed to increase the height of the basic Dread and I did think about using the Dreadknight for this conversion. Examination of the sprues changed my mind, while they are superbly rendered, I didn't think they would be right for what wanted.

Back to the drawing board! A quick browse on the Gallery here on DD showed that the Imperial Guard Sentinel legs would be more appropriate and also provided a plasma cannon for the right arm.

Picture of unpainted model is here: [http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/205366-Dreadnaught%20%28a%29.html]

I'm happy with look, totally different from any other Dread I've seen and while the normal armament will be plasma cannon and close combat weapon with heavy flamer, I have also assembled the missile launcher and a modified assault cannon using the SW Terminator assault cannon.

Hope you like it...

The only thing I don't like about it is that the legs are not proportionate. They are the right length for the body, but the knees should be higher. They bend in an awkward place for a model walking like that. The Dreadknight legs would be way too large, so I agree with you there, but I think if you want the model to look right, you need to increase the length of the lower legs, and perhaps shorten the upper legs a bit.

Just my opinion of course. If you are happy with it that's all that matters!

I really like the effort put in to this, and I definitely agree about the leg length on vanilla Dreads. But I think the legs here are almost too long. It's not too much, just enough that it looks a little topheavy and awkward to me. But nice conversion work.

This looks too much like you're trying to make a dreadnought into a sentinel or a warwalker. These things aren't supposed to be lithe and nimble.

And please tell me you don't intend on hiding stuff behind it...

Hey Ari, i for one have always thought that GW dreads were a little too short. I always thought that if they were to try and "run" anywhere, they would just fall over. Mainly due to the 'dumpy' legs.

The dread in your pic looks good, but i do have to agree with Aldarion, the legs just don't look like they are jointed correctly, they look a little awkward. Also, it does look a little top heavy now imo.

Still though, i should make an impressive centre piece.

Here is a pic of a Tall dread i made a little while ago, Hope it helps.

Fantastic conversion, Hits_the_spot, and shows exactly the direction the OP should be aiming, from here - more Hulk, less chicken.

Hey Hits_the_spot what are those shin plates? Seems to also be the same plate that is on the left arm. That is an amazing conversion.

I also agree about the legs. I would cut them and re-glue them so they had normally bending joints. Adding more armor plates to the sides to beef them up would also be an improvement.

It's a good concept and I think it could be a hot conversion with some tweaks.

The legs need to be a bit beefier. Or the torso smaller The dreadknight actually has pretty good proportions.

It looks good, just the legs need to be a little shorter. Maybe if they didn't have the top joint, as in ankle shin thigh hip... instead of that last short section being there. A little more armor on the legs would help too.

@ Hits_the_spot- I like the way yours turned out. Really looks good on the Furioso Librarian Dreadnought. Doing a Blood Angels successor I take it?

Think I agree with the comments about the 'double hip' joints! These have been altered to a 'normal' joint and once glue has set I'll post revised pics.

Thanks for all your comments.

The legs are just backwards, they are designed to look like the go the other way, like the way a sentinel's leg works.

from the looks of the original posters dredd I would recomend three things

1 cut away the joint below the hip and reatatch the leg to the hip without the extra joint. At the moment you have hip, extra, knee and ankle it's all wrong
2 beef it up. the legs are a bit flimsy and could do with either extra hydrolics or some armour plates
3 after you have done all that sit back and have yourself a nice cool refreshing drink.

I tried not to make the dread look like he was going to fall over and plates were added for a tougher look.

yer, I think sentinal legs work good, but they need armour to bulk them up a bit otherwise it looks like a dreddy on stilts.
